This morning I realized why I disliked the GI Joe presentation so much. Sure, I would have preferred a Destro reveal but that isn’t what irked me. What I really wanted to know is what is their strategic direction of GI Joe?
So we have 6” figs with new designs? Why? Are they standalone? Are they related to a new toon? Will they be featured in the SE movie? Where is GI Joe going in the next year? This is what I really wanted to find out.

... One thing that has me puzzled by the poster is that it has vehicles like the MOBAT, Bridgelayer, VMP MkII, MBT Mauler, etc. all of which are 3-3/4 (4") scale. So, do you think they put them on the poster to just add some flair, or do you think this could be a hint of rereleased vehicles later in the year? ...
This poster, to me, just means marketing was intended for sensitive parents or children, and yet it shows a lack of discernment. It’s more like virtue signaling nonsense in my opinion. Specifically, the G.I. Joe characters are not allowed to have firearms which expel lead projectiles, but they are allowed to cut people with edged weapons like “Jihadi John” did in numerous videos? How is one less violent than the other, I ask myself? I’m a parent myself, and I just can’t understand the mentalities of some of these other adults. The illustration depicts battle tanks with 120 mm smoothbore guns, but Gung-Ho is not allowed to hold an M79 40mm grenade launcher? Couldn’t they make a painting with black censor bars over the weapons the characters are holding, or have safe spaces and bunny stroking stations at the convention center for the offended sales reps? They're making me feel like I’m Clint Eastwood’s character, Walt Kowalski, from the film Gran Torino.

I simply took it to mean that they are reintroducing characters which customers might appreciate from a decades famous and recognizable toy line.

The line was so successful, that an animated mini-series or two was created in later years, which dumbed down the product, but didn’t kill the line. The comic books and the product line completely ignored the cartoon series. After a couple of mini-series, the first full cartoon series probably didn’t happen until 1985.

If we’re talking about “A Real American Hero”, the line’s media tie-in was actually a comic book (which sold me on the product line) in 1982. The file cards and the comics books were synchronized, and spoke frequently real world ballistics. Lasers were interesting, but less often used.

DIC toon is where things were dumbed down. My opinion only. The Sunbow cartoon was sci-fi military adventure, but the characters still felt like real people. DIC was GIJoe as a bare bones commercial with no heart or soul (but it is nice to hear Chris Latta's performance there and Metal Head is a guilty pleassure, that is all I can say good about it, lol). |
