This morning I realized why I disliked the GI Joe presentation so much. Sure, I would have preferred a Destro reveal but that isn’t what irked me. What I really wanted to know is what is their strategic direction of GI Joe?
So we have 6” figs with new designs? Why? Are they standalone? Are they related to a new toon? Will they be featured in the SE movie? Where is GI Joe going in the next year? This is what I really wanted to find out. Speculation/Analysis: I think people may be getting ahead of themselves with the "new media" thing. While I don't doubt that Hasbro would LIKE these designs to be used in a new animated offering or whatever, it's unlikely we're going to hear anything until closer to the movie release and possibly not even until afterwards. They're not likely going to push/hype-up an animated series before the movie because that would "steal the movie's thunder" (and vice-versa). I think the common design elements ("Communicators" and metallic plating and whatnot) are just that: There to give the figures some unified elements to make them look like they're part of the same group. Of course, Snake-Eyes gets to be the odd man out because well...he is the odd man out most of the time (and also arguably the most iconic character in the franchise barring perhaps Cobra Commander). Basically, I think they very well may have been designed with "media friendly" in mind but I doubt there's a specific media anywhere beyond the earliest stages of development...yet (I don't think these will precisely be the movie designs either). Not the kind of thing you announce in case it falls through for some reason in its' earliest stages. The meager presentation is probably a combination of two things: The relaunch may be the biggest thing for US, but for Hasbro it's mostly just "a thing." Notable, important for the history backing the franchise, but in the grand scheme of things it's not even close to the biggest thing they've got going this year. The first two waves very much seem like a "whet the appetite" lead-in for the movie line, so I expect Joe to get a much bigger "push" at SDCC. MAYBE even with the first news of media beyond the movie (IE a follow-on animated offering from eOne). But the bottom line, for me, on this new product and new media is this: Back in the day Hasbro created the figures first and THEN let the media surrounding those characters get created. It may well be the same thing this time, in terms of their designs. None of this means that it wasn't a poor presentation, of course, nor does it mean anybody's wrong for wanting more info (naturally we're always going to want more info). Just that put in perspective, what we're seeing isn't entirely unusual for Hasbro. We as superfans are inclined to feel like Joe should get a "full court press" when it comes to a relaunch but generally that's not how Hasbro operates, particularly with brands that have been dormant for a few years, and with the shrinking shelf-space at major brick and mortar retailers. Remember even the 25th line only started with a couple five packs, and initially they didn't even really plan for much/anything more. Last edited by Jmacq1; 02-25-2020 at 09:11 AM.. |

You'll just have to wait for the actual teaser to be released like everyone else. They haven't even finished filming the movie yet so what they saw is likely an unfinished pile of random-but-"exciting" footage more than anything else. Probably not even representative of what the actual teaser will be. |

You're not going to get much/any more information on the teaser. It was extremely limited in who was allowed to see it (major shareholders...who probably aren't posting on message boards) and they didn't release it publicly.
