It wasn't just Joe. MOTU and Transformers hit rock bottom in the early 90's. Most of us were in high school, video games were taking over, and it was a few more years before Star Wars POTF2 and Spawn re-invigorated the toy world. I think TMNT was the only good line at the time, and it went downhill quick.

As far as constantly releasing new versions of the main characters, yeah I see where it is definitely good for people new to the line. It can become too much, though, and hurt the line if there are too many versions of the same character released too quickly. It's a fine line to walk. I also wonder in this age of online orders/ebay how much it matters to have the main characters on the pegs of the store. Every year I have to get at least one or two of my daughter's xmas gifts on ebay. I can't imagine that many parents avoid shopping online these days. And so there is always availability of those characters in a way that there wasn't before (if they're produced in high enough numbers that the price doesn't get ridiculous). |

This is where I imagine Hasbro Pulse should step up and stock the "starters" after regular retail is on the next wave. Don't choke your retail partners with re-releases, just keep a low-level stock of them on hand for as long as the line continues. Then - and this is critical - cross-sell other figures from the series on your cardbacks and link them as being available on Pulse. Nobody cross-sells on their packaging anymore and I don't understand why. Instead it's usually an overwrought photo of the figure that's already inside the package. And Hasbro should be legally barred from picturing figures on their vehicle and playset boxes if those figures are not being contemporaneously released at retail. Look at the Jabba's palace packaging and the Slave-I packaging. Figures all over them that you (and casual buyers and parents) will never see for sale. And really, why would you release a VC Jabba and Crumb alongside the playset, right? Anyway...that's all for this crazy, meandering rant.

Duke's head sculpt just looks like a scaled up version of the last few 4" figures. Kind of ridiculous to say he looks like that stylized video game character. The Sideshow figure is still far and away the worst likeness of him ever, but that goes for most of the Joes they did.
Failing that, maybe the sculptor was just a fan of Josh McCown. Which isn't so bad really, because he was a tough sob.
