I wish these martial artists had more screentime in the media.

I'm Asian, and while I appreciate the representation, I do not like this casting (in addition to Henry Golding).
Iko was phenomenal in The Raid movies. I thought Wu Assassins was okay at best. Hard Master he is not. Guess Ken Watanabe/Hiroyuki Sanada/Donnie Yen, etc. wasn't available. Last edited by tylerzero; 09-07-2019 at 02:12 PM.. |

Not my Hard master haha. He is a good actor. Wish he was a bit older but not a deal breaker. I had my own successful Kung fu school at the age of 25 so it can be perceivable

Lol. Iko Uwais is going to be in a F—ing GI JOE movie and you guys are complaining. This is obviously gearing up to be a hardcore martial arts/ action film in the vein of JOHN WICK and the RAID. No one who will make this film a success cares about Iko’s ethnicity. If we get a GI JOE flick that’s a tenth of the quality of THE RAID, it will be a miracle.

I'm all for it, the Raid movies are just non-stop action greatness so his fight scenes will be epic. I'll reserve judgement on his portrayal once I see onset pics.

Wait, wait, wait...hold the phone. I was told the whole "asian Snake Eyes" thing was actually sensible and maintained the "outsider" part of the origin story because he still wasn't Japanese. I was told this was common knowledge. But now the Hard Master is, himself, non-Japanese? Any asian will do?
I'm going to need someone to connect some dots here or else maybe, JUST MAYBE the studio kinda sees all asian people as one big blur and they aren't really paying attention to the details. If that were true then that whole argument never held water and there would be some crow to eat over in the Snake Eyes thread. Maybe this really is all being done to pander to the asian box-office at the expense of the source material. And maybe the people calling that out had a point. Maybe. Something to consider!

Having never seen WU or the Raid movies I bit into them today to see Iko's acting. First episode of Wu put me to sleep. I will have to maybe watch it again. Raid was nothing but fight scene after fight scene, whether with guns or knives or fists and feet. I was thoroughly bored with it and I can see how Judge Dredd 2012 can be compared to the movie as they do have similar themes. A bit on the cheap side as far as movies go, Raid was ok but could have told its story in about 45 minutes to an hour instead of an hour and a half. I can respect the work and dedication that goes into long drawn out fight sequences but for me unless it has some cool element to it it is no better than a saloon bar fight. I don't think of the Hard Master as a martial artist who has fight scenes. Think about it, in which comic do we see him actually fight? Exactly. He is the kind of master who does not have to fight, which is a theme that Hama uses often. When you reach a certain level you will not have to fight, just intimidate. I am pretty sure we have never seen Hard Master actually in a fight. He is the wise old sensei. Perhaps they will take a "Yoda in the prequels" approach to Hard Master. For the record seeing Yoda younger and fighting Sidious to me was just a bit awkward. Neat battle but seemed weird and out of place to have him leaping about. As we see casting news I think more and more that they are going far from the source material as possible. We are all going to have to look at this with different eyes. (broken record) If it does wind up looking like a 70's martial artist movie set in present day or the near future... well that is not what I hope to see, but then that is just not my type of movie. I find them rather boring. I need a good story.

I think it's safe to say there's never going to be a good Joe movie. They are just namelsapping this and doing whatever they want - history and source material be damned.

I don't understand the casting other than they want to get the buzz of having a Raid cast member on the film to make fans think it will look and feel like The Raid.

Just as long as they attempt to make it look like Japanese marital arts, I'm cool with it. Not a bunch of karambit knives and things that will look out of place in a ninja clan.
