First off - forget the character's personal characteristics & why one couldn't possibly be the other because they both existed at the same time in the fiction blahblahblah.
This has come up a few times before. The theory is that newer characters were essentially updated versions of previous characters in a given specialty. Examples Zap = Bazooka Roadblock = Heavy Duty Cobra Trooper = Viper = Neo-Viper Scrap Iron = Metalhead Is there a detailed list on this? Does Hawk = Duke? EDIT: I dunno how this ended up in the News & Rumors forum. Sorry 'bout that. :(

Short-Fuze - Downtown
Stalker - Beachhead Breaker - Dial-Tone Rock 'n Roll - Roadblock - Repeater Tripwire - Lightfoot Scarlett - Lady Jaye Clutch - Crankcase - Skidmark Steeler - Heavy Metal Ace - Slipstream Airborne - Crazylegs Ripcord - Freefall Blowtorch - Charbroil Gung-Ho - Leatherneck Torpedo - Wet-Suit Flint - Falcon (a little iffy but...) Doc - Lifeline Roadblock and Heavy Duty are two different MOS, so not a direct replacement. Hawk - Duke doesn't work because Hawk was always overall and Duke was worked in to be his 2nd in command kind of role. In the toys, yes, they were more then likely meant as replacements. Breaker got "retired" in favor of Dial-Tone and so on. This allowed Hasbro to create new figures. It's alot easier to sell a new figure called Dial-Tone then it is to sell another Breaker repaint (or at least it was back then). That's why when they used the same name/character, it was a completely different look (Stalker, Rock 'n Roll). It also created a larger character database for Hasbro to use instead of being stuck forever with the same 20 odd names, they now have access to 200+ or so. Interestingly enough, the Downtown figure ended up being repainted and renamed as Short-Fuze for a Night Force set.

i dont know if i would see it as that, when gi joe started it was 13 people who brought something to the table and as time goes on , they are going to want to do different things like grunt going to college and getting married then rejoined the joes. so a changing roster is going to reflect that.

To be clear, for the purposes of this train of thought, I'm only looking at the unpainted toys - not bios or any of their 'fluff' Blowtorch = Barbecue = Charbroil?
