I hear you BigErn.
Plus, to you reboot people: 1. GI Joe Extreme = sucked. Tanked. 2. GI Joe Reloaded = not terrible, but still tanked. 3. GI Joe AE following the original continuity = better than 1 or 2, and successful.

Everything I hear from the folks at Joereloaded is that there will be a reboot and that it will sync the comic with the continuity established in the new movie. Can't say I'm surprised, but I can't say I'm happy about it either.
I feel like this was a marketing decision, likely made in a boardroom by people who do not have the love, history, or appreciation for what has come before. They likely feel like they are making a decision to unify the brand, and thus sell more stuff, basically their main goal as a business. I can appreciate that, but as a fan it stinks, and as a business decision, I can come up with tons of reasons why it's not that great of an idea either. The one question I keep coming back to, is why can't they establish a new status quo that mirrors the movie without essentially telling us that the last 25 years of comics no longer count? Is the current continuity so broken that it needs the "reset" button to be pushed? Keeping the old continuity doesn't mean they need to reference something from an 80's Marvel comic on every page thus alienating new readers. That would be foolish. But there's no reason they couldn't have the old stories in the wings with an occasional nod to us old timers while making it quite accessible to new readers. I don't want the book bogged down by continuity, but I sure as heck don't want it tossed in the trash either. It can't be that hard to make a Hamaverse continuity book that's still new-reader friendly. This is one of those times they probably aren't listening to the fans, and they will blindly do what they think will be most profitable, in spite of anything us overly passionate fans say. What a shame, as I think they are missing an opportunity to market to new fans and keep the old ones happy as well. Seems to me THAT would yield the best bottom line. I, too, love the sig but is it too late? Is this decision set in stone? Jericho was brought back after cancellation. If enough of us write Hasbro concerning a continuation of the 25 year rich history filled continuity, is there a chance they would listen. Or is the decision set in stone?
If there is a chance, to whom do we write? I have no clue how to go about this. |

and no, Nacho, I do NOT believe this reality is or has been damaged enough to warrant the reset button. Especially when things were just getting VERY interesting. I wish this were the way the majority over at tni.com thought or even joereloaded.com I guess we can write Hasbro.

I've made all my various points supporting the current continuity at Joereloaded, and that community is pretty divided. I am a little surprised at the number of people over there open to a reboot. Other than a handful of dead characters, the Hamaverse could be taken in any direction they want, so I'm not sure why a reboot is necessary. Like most, I'm very excited about the latest DDP work, and it'll be a shame that we don't get to see the aftermath of WWIII. The only reason to reboot is to make stark changes, and that's the rub. The history defines these characters. It's what makes them more than just dudes in camo. It appears Hasbro thinks we won't notice. On the IDW boards discussing Joe, the Transformer trolls are very pro-reboot and think all us continuity supporters are just whiny fanboys (and girls). Personally, I think that's just a biproduct of TF getting the reboot, but that continuity was a much bigger mess, especially with the Dreamwave disaster. I was quite uncomfortable at the IDW board... nothing worse than condescending Transfans. Still, as far as the comic is concerned, I'd like to say 'write Hasbro' or 'write your congressman', but on this topic, I don't think Hasbro really cares about fan input even if the decision was still up in the air. They are VERY open to listening to which version of Snake-Eyes repaint we want in the next figure wave. However, I seriously doubt they want marketing advice from their fans. What do we know? We just buy the stuff... Last edited by nacho; 02-17-2008 at 02:53 AM.. |

OK...as I said before, I would like to see a reboot! BUT, maybe my opinion was slightly misinterpreted. Maybe I should call it a semi-reboot. Let me explain...
I am 110% AGAINST rewriting the characters' histories and backgrounds. I believe the things that everyone has learned about the characters over the last 25yrs ARE valid and shouldn't be discarded!! However, I think it is possible to take all of which we have learned and point it in a new direction! For example; WWIII (even though I haven't personally read it) seems to be very well liked. And it's been confirmed that DDP will complete that story line. After that, have the team disbanned for a year or so (in the story, I mean) and then bring in a new threat, whatever it may be. Have the remaining team members re-instated. And LH could even start writing some, dare I say it, NEW characters! In other words, keep the history of BOTH the Marvel and DDP runs and just spin off of that! I'm not sure how they could (or if they would) bring back any characters that had experienced untimely deaths. But, hey, I'm just a fan. I'm not a writer...let them figure that out! |

I hate the idea of a reboot. I always have hated the idea of a reboot. Adapt. Agood writer can take a story and put his stamp on it and pass it off to the next creative team with the editor to guide them. but the new thing is to reboot or pretend to reboot. the only way I can voice my concern is with my small (anyway)wallet. My brother and I will continue to support 2packs with continuity comics. i heard hama said he had fiteen issues in the can or sixteen. a friend pm'd this info.

To who or whom do we write at Hasbro to voice our dismay?
