Neither of the movies were what they could have been, if I’m being honest. If I’m being fair, Retaliation was a better film than Rise of Cobra. I think the Marvel run was pretty campy for comics, and the movies were pretty much at the same level. For me, I think the nostalgia factor allowed me to tolerate a lot of nonsense I wouldn’t accept in another franchise.

To be fair, one of the central elements of G.I.Joe has always been a massive cast, and even if you cut it down by 90% you're still left with more characters than ideal for a good 2 hour+ movie. This is another reason why the franchise is better suited to a TV show, than has a lot more time to sprawl out over.
I can imagine a good movie being made that focuses on one element of G.I.Joe, which is why I would welcome a Snake Eyes movie - despite being sick of Snake Eyes. Or maybe an origins style movie based in Vietnam up through the early '80s, where we meet lots of central characters? But a movie that has to encompass modern special ops soldiers and sci fi stuff and ninjas and Bond villain types and enough recognizable vehicles to keep fans happy - I don't think you can do that well in 3 hours. Imagine trying to turn Game of Thrones into a 3 hour movie. There are just too many characters and too much going on. |

I'm not sure I agree that the cast is unwieldy. How many people do you really need to focus on?
Cobra at its core is Cobra Commander, Destro, and Baroness plus a bunch of troopers. If you want to throw Storm Shadow in there for a Snake Eyes rival, that's fine, but you don't need many more. (Zartan wasn't introduced until the second miniseries.) And as long as you have Duke, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes on the Joes' side, then everyone else is gravy (I'm sure Roadblock, Stalker, and/or Heavy Duty would be a great part of a first film too). You could follow the show's blueprint and save Flint, Lady Jaye, and Shipwreck (fan favorites) for a second film. That's not really that many characters to make a successful first film.

Even with the massive amount of characters, both the cartoon and the comic still only focused on a few most of the time and was able to do it successfully.
So it's a cop out to say the character base is too big to make a good movie.

The mistake Jon M. Chu made with Retaliation was directing it.

GI Joe is about huge casts and tons of story lines, it's why its better as TV series and comic books. A GI Joe film is going to always be tough without trimming down the cast heavily. It's like comic book films, where you give individual characters their own movie to be developed, then you bring em together once they have had their development and audiences know what they need to. To start from the ground up with a movie with 20 some characters, it's going to be messy when you try to be under 2 hr run time

Considering they cut almost all the characters from the first movie, it's incredibly bizarre that he is complaining about "servicing" ROC characters.
How did he expect to make a GI Joe movie, either reboot or not, without Cobra Commander, Duke, Storm Shadow, and Zartan? Folks often completely misunderstand what a director does, but the choice to kill off the old cast was largely out of his hand, Channing Tatum wanted out of the film and Paramount wanted new characters in the film, so Chu had no choice. The cartoons were pretty dumb and made for children, you also had many more hours over a hundred episodes to work with. The comics have been ongoing for over 20 years too, it's not fair to compare such long projects to a movie that is less than 2hrs in length that has to introduce, develop the characters, as well as tell a story. Exactly.
The number of GI Joe characters is not an impediment to a good film. It's just an excuse, and a pretty poor one. Originally Chu was upset that he couldn't use more ROC characters in a rebooted film, so his claims here are disingenuous.

Which I went into.
Why did the Avengers have no problem doing it? Because the characters were given their own individual movies, they had multiple movies where their characters were developed ahead of time, when Avengers came along, we knew majority of everything needed. You had 4 long films all tie into it ahead of time. GI Joe had none of that. Avengers also had 7 characters when you include the bad guy in it's first film. Joss Whedon has said doing his second of two Avengers films was "a nightmare" because of the large cast.
