I would think we'd get an announcement by the end of the Joecon...but we'll see.
A big issue is that 2018 is clearly a "regroup year" for Hasbro. The last couple years haven't seen a number of projects not exactly pan out: The Hub failed to pan out in expanding Hasbro's reach as an IP company, resulting in them pulling out and reworking franchise plans. Jem, MLP AND Transformers have either bombed or drastically under-performed. The big IDW Revolution never delivered on its promises of leveraging Transformers' popularity into elevating Hasbro's other library titles, and most of the titles launched bombed within a year of rollout. The issues of IDW might have also rolled into issues getting Hasbro's Cinematic Universe into production. I'm not sure Hasbro's going to do much for Joe this year. Maybe next year as they gear up for 2020's "big push" for Joe and Micronauts.

Derryl said no product to announce, but maybe he meant retail?

Jem and Magic as non action figure brands are exceptions to all this so I’ll circle back and talk about those later. Putting those exceptions aside all the other items hitting the $150 price mark fits certain patterns: 1) the items hitting that price point are intended to be “show stoppers” drawing attention across the convention and from the media—that extra “show stopping attention” is what allows them to still sell the high volume despite the high price point. Without that “show stopper” attention they are not going to end up creating enough desire to sell the thousands of units they produced for that much money (this is different from FunPub which typically only needs to sell hundreds of units in order to sell out). But we saw this with the Knights of Unicron set. They thought it was going to be a show stopper, it wasn’t, and thus despite it being a peak year for the TF property that set proved to be a disaster for them and instead their mid-tier Dinobot set became the hotter buy. 2) they want that “show stopping attention” directed towards a hot active brand (ie a brand with active retail presence that year) thus making their show stopper for a brand that doesn’t have a strong marketing push is a poor marketing decision. 3) (And Hasbro has talked about this in the past) when they offer an item at that higher price point every year they try to make sure to have other items from that brand that is at a lower price point. For example they will often have 3 Tranformer related exclusives: one typically at the lower price range ($60ish or less) one in the midrange ($60ish to $125ish) and one in the higher range ($125ish and up). They typically do similar with Star Wars and Marvel and other brands when they are hot). Thus as a rule of intent Hasbro has stated they try to make sure to only have something at their booth hit that top tier price point if it’s a brand with multiple offerings that year so they can be sure to have something at a lower price point too. At the moment Joe is not a brand they are likely to push with multiple exclusives thus the 1 exclusive they are likely to offer is likely to be in the low or mid price range (ie less than $125ish). Now Jem and Magic the Gathering are exceptions because a) those are unique (non action figure collector) audiences where the majority of those collectors would take a pass on everything else Hasbro has thus could commit all their Hasbro budget to that one item they want, and b) those Jem dolls were technically produced by someone other than Hasbro but just sold at the Hasbro booth thus they were produced in much much lower quantities than what Hasbro makes and thus there were less they had to sell through at that price point.

All this adds up to reasons why what works at FunPub/JoeCon is not a good comparison for gauging what works at Hasbro/SDCC.

So, I guess no hope of Joe SDCC exclusives? At least I am enjoying my MCC.

Did anyone officially (or unofficially) ask DD this weekend if we can expect a Joe for SDCC? None of the YouTubers did. I forgot to too.

I was thinking about asking him, but decided not to. Even though Derryl DePriest and Mark Weber were at JoeCon, they seem to be there as Collectors/Fans of the G.I. Joe brand and not as representatives of Hasbro. Hasbro and Entertainment Weekly tend to officially announce their SDCC exclusives at the last minute. I honestly think we’re not going to get a G.I. Joe SDCC Exclusive this year.

That's what I said last year. Happily I was wrong.

Because of the success of last year's Joe exclusives, I will bet we will get one this year.
