Don't be surprised if the GI Joe toys get a complete reboot as well. In all likelihood, they will not even be in the same scale as the current line. Last edited by IC3 VIP3R; 04-25-2018 at 08:06 AM.. |

Well it’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything but this seem like the right time. I’m pretty excited at the idea of a reboot. Neither of the previous films were very good. Hoping they take a new approach and focus on great characters and build from that. Don’t need any huge names, just good actors and the right script. As far as toys go. I’m all for a total overhaul. I’ll take a different scale. I’m not married to the old style anymore. Let’s see something different!

The movie must be fun with good character interaction. Plot doesn't matter (Larry Hama said this himself ) Jumanji 2 had a dumb ridiculous plot but fun memorable character interplay, which made it fun and successful. Toys, yes to overhaul. Design them for young people. Modern Era lost me in 2014 anyway, so glad I'm off that stuff, I want to collect some Joes that kids love

I think the GI Joe product line will get a significant overhaul regardless what happens. Hasbro's been aggressive in moving production out of China for a LOT of their product lines. Like what happened in Transformers in 2013/2014, we're going to see Hasbro, effectively, abandon older assets in favor of moving forward.
To me, that gives them a unique opportunity to revamp the GI Joe product concept going forward, since they would no longer be able to rely on an existing library of assets. Whether that means a new scale, style, or aesthetic, remains to be seen. In terms of the movie slate...I think it is a touch aggressive, especially with so little news about next year. Keep in mind, Hasbro's got a number of licenses that have been in development at various times over the past decade they could leverage. In addition to the stated 4 brands in the news post, Hasbro's got: Monopoly (development hell with Ridley Scott for over a decade) My Little Pony (The existing iteration is approaching a decade old. I can easily see a new feature in 2020/21 to relaunch the franchise) Littlest Pet Shop Magic The Gathering (Was set up at Fox, with the Disney purchase, I expect the rights to expire and return to Hasbro within the next few years) Hana Zuki (new initiative that started as a Youtube series) Play-Doh (we've seen stranger...) Bey-Blade (in conjunction with Tomy. If an existing anime film exists, be an easy slot in for them) And I'm sure some of those later slots are being eyed for sequels and/or spinoffs to early projects like GI Joe and MASK. I can easily see GI Joe 2 and a Snake Eyes film if the reboot is successful enough. I AM expecting "Transformers Zero", the long mentioned live action prequel film to get rolled out next year. Hasbro and Paramount have been talking about it for YEARS, Boulder Media has been expanding their resources for the past few years, and it would jive with Hasbro's major shift with Transformers back to the start of the Autobot/Decepticon war with Generations (with Power of the Primes being cut short to accommodate this initiative).

After dipping my toe in the 6 inch Star Wars line, my body is ready for a 6 inch GI Joe line. I hope this comes to fruition soon.

The problem I have with this is that they are already rolling out movies instead of doing a gradual build. Every studio wants their own Marvel Universe. The problem is that instead of doing what Marvel did they believe they can simply force movies in a schedule that are interconnected. DC has tried that and it doesn't seem to be working to well for them.

Toy line needs to pretty much ignore the old angry GI Joe fans who want nothing but old style of figures. They need to overhaul the toys that can attract a new crowd. Move to 6", get higher quality toys, make stuff that collectors will want and stop trying to please your old school fans who is sadly a dying market.
Now they did play with scale in the past, but the related media was also not very successful. Even if the toys are good, you still need the show/movie to well also for the line to have longevity. A difficult thing though is keeping a toy line running, without constant media presence of a tv show, movies, etc, it's hard to keep toys coming. You release new GI Joe along with a new movie for a year or so, but once the hype is gone, you have a hard time releasing anymore toys as stores are busy stocking up on the new current hotness. Paramount wants to bring GI Joe back, they need not only a movie, but they need corresponding animation and other ventures to keep the franchise alive. They need to evolve the franchise, take it new places, as the old fan base who is determined to have it never leave the 80's will not keep it alive. I think that's all that's left of GI Joe. I just can't see a resurgence in popularity, no matter what they do.
We're model trains, my friend.

Nah.. we’re not that dead yet... just dormant. There’s some juice... it’s just got to be good. I expect 6” figures to be a big thing in G.I. Joes’ future. I wish they’d look at animation and TV instead of the big screen, though. Put the Sunbow stuff on Netflix, and announce a new series. If Voltron can get this far with a new Netflix series, Joe would have no trouble going even farther. Make the new toys look just like the show. Do a classics line, like the 25th for the old folks and kids alike. Make different kinds of toys, like Nerf style guns, drones, etc. Do a video game. I think the movie thing is highly overrated... unless you’re partnering with Disney and NOT Paramount.

I'm also confused as to what you're talking about in terms of "build up". Build up to what? These brands do NOT carry the cachet that Marvel or DC or Star Wars or most other MAJOR franchises carry. People aren't going to see a "Snake Eyes" film to build to a "GI Joe" film. Right now...I think Hasbro's more interested in getting these films MADE before worrying about any big crossover.
