I hear they’re casting Armie Hammer as Wild Bill and Johnny Depp as Spirit. What could go wrong?

Good question. It looks like they do about one really good movie per year, and a handful of under-preforming or just straight terrible ones. Here are their recent "hits" in order of most recent:

In addition to Marvel/Disney wisely taking their time to build the MCU, the other reason I think they've been so successful is that the writers, directors, and actors they've hired have been people who quite clearly genuinely love and understand these characters and properties. The Russos, Jon Favreau, James Gunn, Joss Whedon, Downey, Evans, Hemsworth, Holland, these guys all "get it" when it comes to bringing these characters to life. That's what Hasbro/Paramount need to do. It seems like it should be an obvious approach, but while I don't hate either of the Joe movies, neither feels like it was made by people who particularly cared about the property one way or the other.

GI Joe needs to be remade, the old school GI Joe is never coming back and it needs to move on. Stuff like Sigma 6, Renegades all had good ideas, but the implementation all suffered. Heck Rise of Cobra obviously was being influenced by super hero films but they made a huge mistake, and that was making interesting and fun characters. Stoic bad ass military tropes are not gonna sell, kids aren't gonna want this, it needs good actors, likeable unique characters. Don't focus on guns and military stuff, lets show off unique abilities, gadgets, have the characters have personalities people actually like. I liked Retaliation, but can't blame others for not liking it cause who the hell was interesting in that? The Rock has personality, people like that, but hey how about that Flint.... oh Lady J.... yea they have the personalities of rocks. Cast ensemble flicks need everyone to be unique and the audience wants to relate or care about them. Most of the people in GI Joe movies you could care less about. That's what they did with the movies, they were nothing like the old Joe... and everyone hated it. If they move away from what made GI Joe GI Joe, then what's the point?

We need a solid 2 hour stop motion picture film like lego. One big solid commercial with a ton of new toys being advertised. I would love every second of it.

That's the thing, kids don't want any toys period. My son is 8. I have bought my kids tons of toys. They have zero interest. All they care about is video games, or playing outside with literally sticks. It's all imagination, or no imagination. That middle ground of where we were raised to imagine a world around product lines doesn't exist anymore. Lego sets get built once to be thrown in a box. The last set I got my son he didn't even want to build. My daughter still enjoys building them, but doesn't play with anything. There isn't an overhaul that will cater to the current environment. Some kids like some representations of video games characters. Apart from that, not much.
