I agree that its probably news based on an old script. The latest is that the next movie is said to be a reboot. That said, just in case, I am not getting attached to that list of characters. Retaliation included Grunt and Clutch and we all know the major roles they played in the story.

I honestly could care less about the movie so long as it gets us some cool toys. It’s like when ROC came out; the movie was chock full of fail, but a lot of the figures were good and came with lots of accessories so I was happy. These are the things I worry about Hasbro doing:
1-Reducing articulation of the figures. The worst-case scenario would be making all figures 5 POA crap 2-Loading up the line with cheesy gimmicks and spring-loaded BS at the expense of regular gear 3-Way overproducing a first few waves of boring figures, then cancelling a bunch of cool stuff planned for later waves because everything is peg warming Hasbro has a long history of making these mistakes. It seems like they learn a lesson afterwards, but eventually forget and repeat them. I am hoping that they can break that cycle because this might be their last opportunity to get back into retail Last edited by Dem_Yoe'z!; 05-05-2018 at 11:44 PM.. |

If Hasbro does this, and does not make the same mistakes as above, it could be wonderful. |

I think that 6 inch Joes would be ok, but with College draining all my funds, I'm not certain if I could afford a bunch of 6 Inch figures. Maybe do like Marvel legends/Star wars and have a 6 inch line and 3.75? Plus it would be cool to have the new figures line up with the older figures (ROC/Retaliation) also new vehicles would be cool, but for 6 inches would be too expensive. Just my opinion.

Hasbro needs to embrace that. The original line succeeded because they had the most articulation. They had the biggest variety. They had the most colorful characters. ROC failed as an action figure line for only one reason, IMO... the lack of VARIETY and COLOR. If they would have had the same sculpts, but not have painted every one of them black and gray - it would have flourished. Remember - in the end, these things are TOYS for KIDS. |

I'm not sure WHY Hasbro makes it so difficult. Yes, I could see them watering down the line to the same 5 POA, homogenized crap that gets produced for everything else. Same as Star Wars, same as Avengers, same as Jurassic Park, or Rampage, or whatever the movie-of-the-week is.

You guys remember when they made Retaliation, decided it wasn't good enough right before the release date, pulled the action figures, and movie posters from the shelves to make it 3D, then proceeded to release the same wave of action figures again after the release. Sigh, what a shit show.
Needless to say, I'll be impressed when someone doesn't completely screw everything up. It's really not a high bar. |

Presuming Hasbro does that (and I see no reason for them NOT to), I'm not sure they have significant incentive to maintain those old assets. Much as what ultimately happened with the old Vintage assets (which were ultimately destroyed in 2010-ish). Quote:
The benefit in 3.75/4 inch figures is that you can get vehicles that accommodate those figures. The big draw for me for GI Joe were the vehicles. Going the 6 inch route would be a disaster in my opinion. If you look at all the franchises with 6 inch figures there are virtually no vehicles that add any play value. For me I am personally want Hasbro to stick with the 3.75/4 inch scale so we can get upgraded jets and tanks and possibly bases.
Star Wars got, what, FIVE large items last Christmas? Rogue One got three (plus another 3 or so reruns). And Star Wars is a FAR bigger property than GI Joe will be for a long time, if ever. Kids aren't buying like we did, they aren't driving parents to invest in the large scale items we did, and I'm not sure parents are all that big in spending $200 for a play set (which will take up room) compared to the relative space and time usage a tablet might provide. I'm not saying "kids don't want toys", but they don't want or play with them the same way we did. And they most certainly not being "retained" by toy companies as long as they used to. That said, one of the few brands still seeing regular vehicle releases has been Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...a line that is noticeably bigger (in terms of per figure size) than standard 3.75 figure lines. So does (or did) Power Rangers. So I fail to see how GI Joe MUST remain 3.75 to maintain the ability to get vehicles. Heck, Marvel saw the most vehicles and play sets in years when Hasbro was experimenting with the smaller 2.5" scale product. Quote:

I'd like to see Zandar & Zarana and the Dreadnoks feature in the next film. They'd make a great alternative as evil twins to Tomax & Xamot. I wouldn't mind seeing a shirtless, ripped Zandar with tattoos, piercings and dyed hair! And that piece of his sister's shirt around his neck!

Today? We better hope whatever they do speaks to consumers because I don't feel Hasbro has as much overt faith in the brand like they did 35 years ago. And if that means they look at new scales or expressions...then that is what they have to do.

But they've been the best for years. Even when the broader market was doing "super articulated everything", GI Joe always had more accessories, more articulation, more vehicles (relative to the market as a whole)...and it never seemed to carry much impact. The original line succeeded because it spoke the culture of the era and Hasbro put their full support behind it and MADE it a success.

And if that means they look at new scales or expressions...then that is what they have to do. I said it in another thread - the uber-popular video game "Fortnite, Battle Royale" exudes GIJoe-ness for this generation of kids. Its sci-fi, military, action-adventure. A bit goofy, a bit out there... but super fun. Hasbro is missing the boat by not making Fortnite action figures or skinning GIJoe characters into the game. Make the deal already! |

I agree. Try something new... but they have to keep the 'spirit' of what GIJoe 'is' the same.
