The decade I was referring to was 82-92. Meaning if we hadn't made it such a success then, there wouldn't have been a 25th line

G.I.JOE is dead because back in the late 90's congress passed that whole so many hours of educational material on network t.v. crap. Before that we had this thing on network tv called morning and afternoon cartoons, and Saturday morning cartoons. Which is why G.I.JOE got cancelled, exposure dwindled, and then kenner/hasbro merged, and that kenner line Star Wars, sealed the last nail in Joes coffin, as Hasbro became a merchandising entity to keep the lights on. Marvel, StarWars, And Transformers, all owned by separate clients, G.I.JOE Owned by Hasbro....But war toys don't sell???? Tell that to Lanard and Chap Mei, Tell that to Marauder,Or Eagle Force Returns. Hasbro has drunk the political correctness kool aid, and we take the scraps that they dish out to us. I'm sorry but even the FSS, and Collectors Club can't save the brand unless Hasbro gets off their collective butts and brings G.I.JOE back to toy isles in a major multimedia way, cross selling like they do with their other brands. At least IDW has made the Shared Universe concept viable, Imagine if other than a SDCC exclusive if Hasbro would actually made a SHARED UNIVERSE toyline.

I really liked the file cards, I love reading the back story of the men and woman who worked on the line. MOds, thanks for posting those, and thank you for Frank for sharing the images with us.
I might print these off and put them in my file card binder as a intro I also have some interviews with Jim Shooter and Larry Hama about the file card process that I plan on including.

Personally I think the cost was just a bit over inflated. They wanted to charge big con prices for a small con event that was supposed to be family friendly event only it wasn't cost effective to bring the family. The 600 "Superfan" price tag was laughable. Yes the items were nice but for 600 I could do a lot better buying other things. IMO Hasbro doesn't know what direction it wants to go. Nevermind what they want for the brands. Before hascon Hasbro had a lot of promises that fans wouldn't want to miss this event only for what I have been told joe kind of felt like an after thought. Considering what Gi joe has been for Hasbro since 1964 Joe should have had much more of a presence. To me this was very much a missing opportunity for HASBRO to acknowledge one of its most successful brands.

If they are REALLY cancelling the club due to bringing Joe into the Hascon fold, they had better step it up (and I can't imagine they can, either. No money for Club-like output, nor ability to draw in Joe vendors who have to fight pony crowds to find buyers). Otherwise, all they've done is cut off the collector's access to new product. They (we) will dwindle even further by the time the Hasbro Joe re-vamp gets here...
I will remain interested in any new 4" product, but the majority of collectors are pretty fickle from what I've witnessed. New product dries up, they sell off their collections and move on. I don't personally get that, but I'm pretty sure I'm of the minority collector mindset.

Again I'm calling Hasbro out, G.I.JOE was an innovation in Boys toys PERIOD! from 64's military line, to the Amazing and Fantastic Adventure Team line, JOE was a driving force at retail, Packaging, Presence, availability, Marketing! Joe changed from 1/6 warrior, to SuperJoe, which may have been brief, but it showed that the property could be masterfully changed with the times. Fast forward to all the history and honor that went into making and marketing A Real American Hero, G.I.JOE changed and as I stated when Congress and the FCC changed it's educational ruling for cartoons JOE changed with that as well, Hasbro Now has to decide what to do with JOE, when HASCON was announced, and also when we were told that the Collectos club would be ending, I like so many others thought Hasbro was taking charge, I'm sorry but HASCON was a slap in the face to Joe collectors, yes it's cool that we got a panel, and yes, I realize JOE isn't hasbro's only product, but G.I.JOE dominated for decades in the industry, and by their own portfolios JOE made Hasbro a Market leader, Yes times have changed, Hasbro if you're reading these posts, I'm calling on you as a corporation to put forth a real long term viable solution to the G.I.JOE franchise, even if it's a shared universe concept, Give both old and new fans products, that are more than just a gimmick, Give us a cross platform of products, including a great videogame, an animated series, Heck, you guys deal with Marvel, speak with the Marvel Animation Dept, Bring JOE Back to the frontlines where he belongs! Don't water down a new line with 10 different versions of a single character ( Example duke, destro, cobra commander). Get creative, make a live action Adventure Team Series, and enough with the shampoo bottle 12 inch figures, as a parent they are just awful.Next HASCON you put on, Show us that JOE matters, I may just be a forum post to some, Conventions are great, meeting those who produce this and that, but G.I.JOE is not just a brand, He's a LEGACY, one that you Hasbro should put some real marketing and money behind. YO-JOE!

Ummm...
Look. We'd all probably like that, but a publicly-traded company can't go all in on any one product just because a few collectors want it. C'mon. There is waaay more competition for kids' attention today, between tangible and virtual product. Hasbro has said they ARE working on a new approach for Joe, but their plans are not public info yet, hence the "Challenger" status. We have to be patient and see what comes down the pike. I was not AT Hascon, nor would I attend at those prices, having been previously spoiled by the Joecon experience. But I wouldn't call it a slap in the face! It was a valiant attempt to do the most with a small budget (I assume) given to a Challenger brand. The missile command set was a unique throwback item that is clearly still in demand. The Revolution set included a Joe and used Joe parts for other figures. Many Joe legends were invited and attended--I'm guessing more than any of the other Hasbro products (no real knowledge on that, though). However, I'm confused why Kirk was not invited... Again, my only issue is shutting down the Club. They can't touch the product/experience of Joecon...so if the plan is to hope for "homeless" Joecon fans to attend Hascon going forward, that is a wing and a prayer hope at the expense of getting product into fans' hands, keeping the fire for Joes stoked until new product inevitably hits.

Can anyone say how many people attended the dinner and if any other brands had an exclusive event? Just curious.

The Pursuit of Cobra line is a perfect example of how the GI Joe brand was re-energized for me. I'm 40 years old now and I couldn't help but go hunting for more POC figs on pegs where ever I could find them.
The POC line was a new/updated take on old characters and it would have really taken off, had they created an animated series a la Resolute/Renegades. Its too bad that the the TV animation team wasn't in synch with toy dev team who headed up POC. I wonder if that's a result of departments working in silos or not. |
