TRU has been a sinking ship for several years now. With billions in debt out there along with bleeding off millions each month, this was inevitable. The board of TRU including the CEO, admit that things were run poorly and that the infrastructure and management at the store were a direct bi-product of not having enough profit capital to invest in the brick and mortar stores. Simply put..TRU sat at the top of the hill for so long, they began to think name recognition and nostalgia were enough to keep them relevant. They know now how unrealistic this truly was.
And this is what I keep thinking and have been since I got back to collecting in 09 (From the article) "It could not compete in any category that mattered, price, location, speed, brands, and certainly not service, you name it." Distribution was horrible. Price was never competitive. And they never kept enough of the right product in stock. To this day I walk in and see the same items that were in there 2-3 years ago but never replenish items that sell out or sell out quick. This never made sence to me. This is Supply and Demand 101. Buyers want product, seller sells out of product and replenish items, seller makes more money. Simple. I hated when TRU had Joe exclusive because I knew I would only be lucky to get certain items. And I live in the Midwest so that meant even less. I just told my 10 year old son the news and he is pissed. I too am pissed but not surprised.

I think I was more upset when I found out that Chuck E Cheese was getting rid of the animatronics. It's bad enough that it has all these big open windows and no "real" games, but now even the show is gone? I wish I could take my son back to the CEC of 1986, when it was a nice, dark cave, and play some Spy Hunter and Cobra Command and Alien Syndrome and Ikari Warriors with him, before sitting down to a big pizza and watching the show.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...t-to-fill-them Some interesting articles. Some dont think the existing stores will even make it to May. Sad. Employees will have 60 days to find a new job. After that the firms take over for clearance . There are a few buyers looking to buy up to 40% of the stores and run them as a independent franchise under the TRU name-which gives me some peace that the legacy wont completely die. Also there is “talk” of a TRU website still running. |

Apparently my local store is one of the top 100 in the chain so I'm hoping this other group pulls through with their plan.
I think if they succeed and keep some of the stores open they should take a look at how the LEGO stores are run. I realize LEGO's not doing as well as their peak(mostly due to focus on licensed brands IMO) but the stores are usually well-run money machines. They're fun to go to. You always end up spending more than you intend. There'd be a big difference because it's not just one brand but the philosophy of the stores and the way they choose and train their employees is how toy stores should be run IMO. |

Well Hasbro has a habit of peppering in classic vintage figures in its movie toy lines, Marvel, Star Wars, and even Joe movie product got us some nice vintage figures.
And to he honest J, other than Regegades SS the figures to sell out first after the 25th era were almost always ARAH figures. 30th Life Line, Airtight, Low Light, Sci Fi etc we’re considerably harder to find than any of the PoC figures in the wild, at least in my area. When it comes to Marvel Legends and Star Wars I see similar trends. I think the Imperial Probe Droid was the only new Star Wars item to sell out in the post Rogue One world. Hobgoblin, Taskmaster, Mysterio, all classic based figures and they are considerably tougher for me to find than modern or movie versions of characters. Unless it just in my area. |

Ok, so I’ve just been reading and observing everyone’s take on the situation, shared in some of the frustration as well as nostalgic sadness. My thoughts on this are similar, after the investment firm took the reigns in 2005 it should have rebooted the franchise as it had showed the big B&M stores were slowly hemorrhaging. My question is what happened to the whole Toys “R” Us Express idea? When we had one in our local mall around holidays it was always packed. To me this made sence to go in this direction. I mean let’s look at it,
- satellite stores located in busy shopping malls or outlets - less cost to run a smaller store ( utilities, rent, maintenance, employees ) - logistics; carry hottest newest product, like Supermanblue stated: supply and demand 101. I mean keep some older product but focus on what’s selling out and what’s coming out, ya know...keep your fingers on the pulse. - they could also have implemented a free ship to store policy, then when you go to store to pick up you have a good chance the customer is going to buy other items as well. |

I doubt this bodes well for those smaller companies like NECA. I don't think Target or Wally is going to give aisle space to them. I think the diversity of lines is going to further diminish.
For boys toys I see the choices coming to random superhero figs and whatever the toys from the latest movie are but not much in between. LEGO will still be there of course. |
