When I was a kid a trip to Toys r Us was very special, it didn't get any better than that. Even 7 years ago when my wife was pregnant with our first child the doctor was near a TRU and I got to go after every visit, and was quite excited to do so. Now we have our first doctor appointment for our third kid. She offered to stop at TRU that day, I just looked at her and asked why.

Ha ha ha ha ha.
Feel sorry? For Toys R Us? That monster of a company? Do I need to remind you guys how poorly they operate? --------------------------------- If I tell you guys that Rewards programs that give such generous coupons are a problem and your response is to increase prices on all products by 5-30%, what did you guys think would happen to your sales? If I then tell you a business where almost all sales are done on 30% discount days indicates your prices are overpriced and you LAUGH at me, and then you go bankrupt, who was right again? Oh right me. If you are selling toys and you raise the price by $5-10 because only you carry it and then suddenly a lot of people don't come back, what can I say. YOU DESERVED IT. If I THEN tell you that you will Hemorrhage A TON OF MONEY on product from a big toy company, maybe next time, you should listen hmmm? |

There's no love loss between me and Toys R Us. When I was a kid, I'd never heard of TRU. 99% of all my Joes were bought at K-mart, may they Rest In Peace. I remember me and my dad would go to the toys while my mom and sister would buy...I dunno...yarn, or whatever it is women buy. Me and Dad would go straight to the Joes and in them days, you could spend a LOT of time just picking through the Joe stuff. We were poor back then...like super poor...so I knew that a trip to the toys was just to look. But, one night my dear ol' dad said I could get whatever I wanted. I couldn't decide and went back and forth between a couple Joes. I asked him which one I should get and my wonderful father said, "Hell, get 'em all." There were seven different Joes that night. Can't remember all the ones that were there, but I definitely remember getting Spirit and I think Gung Ho. Long story short, K-mart holds a special place for me. Toys R Us is just a big store with toys.

Yeah, let me not forget the weeks leading up to Christmas 2016 when their Star Wars pegs and shelves were nearly empty for weeks but they had cases and cases of Hasbro Star Wars stock piled on the tops of the shelves hidden behind advertising banners. I pointed it out to the employees several times but they never got pulled down until months later, where an endcap of figures sits on clearance now. One of the only stores you could still find 5POA Sabine and K2SO all this year because they waited so long to put their stock out.

Dude there won't be any custom fodder unless you want legos, barbies or funko pops.

TRU is what gave us 50th anniversary Joes, so now the last outlet to actually sell Joe product looks to fold (not counting Ross or DG).
Will G.I. Joe go the "boutique" route, relying solely on direct to consumer or some sort of subscription based service like what they did with Masters of the Universe? Will they follow the Club's lead with the FSS program and sprinkle in some vehicles or figure sets? Or is Hascon (and sometimes SDCC) going to be the only place to get our Joe fix? No third Joe movie either, and our only hope is the new shared Hasbro Universe our only shot at getting any Joes in the future. Grim news indeed. Cherish your modern era collections....we might not see anything else like it again in our lifetimes.

I can't even express how much this upsets me.
I have fond memories of TRU, and could relay them here but I won't. I go to my local stores like every two weeks. I understand that buyers habits change...toys fade in and out of popularity. But I think a few things are in play. Kids today. I hate to sound like the old man in the room, but kids today are more interested in streaming games than toys themselves. Online purchasing. Its easier...and often cheaper at times. Brick and mortar stores are harder and harder to maintain. From rent to staffing to store up keep. These days shipping straight from a warehouse eliminates all those costs. And honestly those costs are felt at the stores themselves...Transformer are a great example...usually their a few dollars more at TRU. And lastly the toys themselves I've heard all the reasons behind the dumbing down of toys to these 5POA things. And you know what? From my perspective. They might cost less to make and buy...but their sitting there on pegs. Serious my local TRU still has TONS of Force Awakens figures...I mean A LOT. I've seen similar issues with Marvel figures and other movie lines. I know I'm not buying them...and seemingly no one else has been. In the end I think TRU probably needs to rethink its business model. And maybe even cut down some of its toy stock and go with a better online presence. Stay more in B&M for the Baby's R Us stuff. With a token selection of toys...and maybe even stay more focused on collectors items than a wall of 'blockbuster film' merchandise. I don't know...I don't have all the answers, but I will be very sad to see what my sister has often called my 'Church' close its doors. |

I got Beach-Head and Dr. Mindbender there the first time I saw them and played with them at a pizza place we went to after.
Their best exclusive was still M.A.S.K. Laser Command. I think I finally got when it went on clearance after ogling it for a while. I think it was like $50 and came down to $15. |
