I like 'em. If anyone doesn't want theirs, you know where to find me.

Based on the feedback, it seems that a lot of you disagree with John Marshall's statement about the subsets. I actually do agree with his statement and I remember being disappointed when I first saw the subsets in the store. By then I had the main characters, and I felt that I did not need duplicates of the same figures in different colors. I did pick up the TRU exclusive subsets that were sold in the 2000's. I had the same feelings of disappointment when TF was announced a couple of years ago and I skipped the Con set, and just picked up Metal Head and General Mayhem individually. Once the Smasher's Maurauders were announced as the final Con set, that same feeling of disappointment returned. But that is my personal take.

They gave younger collectors like me a second chance at main characters. My first versions of Flint and Duke were Tiger Force as well as TF Roadblock was a great replacement as my V1 had broken. These figures were also a lot cheaper for Hasbro to produce. I think it was a win/win all the way around. The club has been profitting off this for 16 years.
As with everything, moderation is key. Tiger Force Psyche-Out is absolutely my favorite character/figure, yet after some time you see this whole Python Patrol, Night Force, Tiger Force, Horse Force or whatevertheheck for what it is. Last edited by killahpl; 02-04-2018 at 09:19 AM.. |

Don't forget wolf squad in 2015 and 2016. Hasbro is so used to this practice.

I kind of see it as they took volunteers from the Joe team who were willing to go on a special mission, putting them into a subteam. "Hey, roadblock, we're looking for some volunteers to go check out this cobra base. We'll call this team tiger force"

So I was reading the Joe section on the Action Figures of the 1980s by John Marshall and came across this comment:
"The years 1988 and 1989 were poor years for Gi Joe. Although the line was expanding, the ideas were running dry. The worst aspect of this was the money saving practice of releasing subsets featuring previously issued items and figures in new colors, masquerading as new toys. This included Tiger Force, Night Force, Slaughter's Marauders and Cobra's Python Patrol." |

And yet you need not look further than this thread to see how criticized the Club have been for doing this too much. A good part of the reason why they have profited as much as they have is because many people will take whatever they can get because there's no other game in town - and not because everybody is 100% happy with what they're getting.

That’s an absolutely disingenuous and dishonest misrepresentation of the subsets. That would be true IF the subsets replaced new figures but they didn’t. Hasbro released all new waves of new figures as well as re-released the older characters in the subsets to get them back in the market.

THis makes no sense to me, doesn't matter if it's the only game in town or not. When ROC figures were on the shelves I didn't like them so I didn't buy them. I can't imagine spending over $400 on something I hate beacause it's the only thing being produced. I can barely stomach spending that much this year but not at all because they are sub teams.

This is what I don't get. You weren't forced to buy the sub teams if you didn't want them. There were plenty of reguler new figures being produced as well.
