So this might be slightly off topic, but I think it fits. Is the club essentially the same as Super 7 who makes He Man figures for Mattel? Could Hasbro license out Joe to someone like Neca, Super 7, Funko, or even a Kickstarter company to make Joes if Hasbro isn’t going to make them? We’d all buy them right?
Hasbro should do either kickstarters ala Sail Barge, or stick to SDCC/HasCon exclusives until they're ready to do retail again.

However, even if Hasbro did award a new license, we are still stuck with the same fundamental problem: The economies of scale do not favor producing entirely new parts. |

I imagine Hasbro ended the Club is because of HasCon. They want their own convention to be THE convention fans of their properties go to.

In any case I would rather have Hasbro keep Joe in house. Yes plus their single universe idea. Let's not forget Brian did mention before the con that he is done this time.

I was really surprised to see all the people wiling to drive and fly for hours (including myself) to attend a convention of military style plastic toys. Not to mention all the money they are willing to spend. Hasbro has to realize that there is a market for G.I. Joe. Maybe not big enough for retail, but definitely a market large enough to: a) make a profit and b) maintain their own property alive.

Toys like this require large economies of scale to succeed. The costs of tooling and manufacturing dictate the price-per-unit. They need widespread national distribution to keep the prices down. And those kinds of retail sales aren't successful in the absence of a mega-hit movie or video game series. The whole point of the Club is that they could 'cheat' and lower production costs by re-using existing molds. Guys like Marauder and Boss Fight are great because they are successfully making toys that are as good as - or superior to - Hasbro's Joe figures. But there's a problem, because they are still limited to a small number of parts (even smaller than Hasbro's, since they can't piggyback on older molds). Don't forget - BFS's first HACKS Kickstarter was wildly successful but they STILL lost money. And now BFS's HACKS project is pretty self-sufficient but they are still strictly limited in the number of molds they can use. It doesn't matter whether it is Marauder or EFR or Dime Novel cowboy toys... That's a barrier that you can't easily get over. So could Hasbro keep making Joes for the adult collector market? Sure. In fact, I hope they do. But they're still going to have the same problem. Without mass retail sales, they will still be forced to re-use the same basic toolings... Which is exactly what the Club was doing, and charging $40 a figure for it. And that's the big problem. Even if Hasbro does come up with new product for Joe collectors, it would not be fundamentally different from what the Club was already doing. I certainly hope that the renaissance of adult collector 1:18 toys and the success of events like JoeCon convince Hasbro that this is a market worth pursuing. I just don't expect that it will be as successful or lucrative as we might like. |

I honestly only want more figures from Hasbro if they fit in with Modern Era. I'm far too invested in that scale and line to start anything else, and they are so far toward completing all of ARAH that they ought to finish it.

So me and my son Alex went to the panel of 1995 and beyond. Kurt Bozigian (original product manager of Joe I believe) is up there going about his 4 year son asking what does a hot wheels car do and it hits that he needs to incorporate play features into all GI Joe toys. I sitting there thinking wow this is the guy that ruined GI Joe. After the panel was over and me and my son were walking back into the sales floor my son who is 11 years old says to me that guy that was talking made GI Joe stupid. Some of my favorite vehicles I have for my guys are the ones you gave me dad. They roll and the guns move and they are the right size and I like that because they are not real big and shoot things. The big ones look stupid. I like to pretend they shoot and put my guys in them. I look at my son and smiled. I go that is because you have an imagination and don’t need for anybody to tell you what something does. You like to figure things out on your own. Did anyone else think the same thing during that panel?

I've heard him speak before and had similar reactions. It was my wife, this time, who leaned over to me when he talked about what toys did and had a disgusted look on her face. She whispered that he was missing the point, that it was the imagination that the child brings to the toy that made it what it was. I try not to argue with my wife, but I wouldn't have tried in this case anyway. I'm with her on this one.
