They finally put the X-Men in reasonable facsimiles of their comic costumes at the end of Apocalypse, so we'll see if that carries through into Dark Phoenix or not. Let's not forget that even inflation-adjusted, Deadpool is the highest-earning X-movie and had an incredibly faithful costume. How would a black leather clad Deadpool have gone over? Also don't forget the clueless execs delayed production of that movie forever and gave it a cut-rate $58 million budget, about what a Fifty Shades of Grey movie gets. So let's never pretend that the executives are "experts" who "know what they're doing."

Marvel movie figures are put out side-by-side to the comic figures, but they tend to sell just as well, because the designs actually look like HIGHER detail versions of the same costumes and characters. The "animated"-style Marvel figures are geared only to kids because collectors aren't interested in them. DC on the other hand had some success in the past with animated-style figures selling to collectors, because their cartoons appealed to adults so much and the animated designs were stylish. Renegades had a chunky, angular style which wasn't very visually appealing. Resolute had a much better style and those figures did sell like gangbusters. So Resolute toy sales were an example of redesigning characters in ways that still appealed to longtime fans, just like the MCU movie figures. If Joe put out a movie with faithful costumes, and the movie figures looked like more real, or more detailed versions of the same classic Joe figures, then they would sell just like Resolute figures did and Marvel's movie figures do. I think a new cartoon like The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes would do good.
The stories were very engaging...

You can't just dismiss the designs. They were incredibly boring and had no basis in the visual appearance of any past Joe toys, other than SE, SS, Baroness and to an extent Destro. Toys have to look appealing to sell. Doesn't matter how super-articulated the toy is and how good the packaging is if you're selling Jar Jar Binks and little orphan Ani.
I thought the ROC designs were fine and there is no indication that had any significant bearing on the toy's success. On the shelf the toyline looked great. |
