That's a perfect example of the mind-numbing, tin-eared, clueless incompetence that has dwindled down and neglected what was once the flagship of the company. Hurry up with G.I. Joe/Battlefront, the cartoon, and the new wave of KRE-Os before all my kids are teenagers!!

I think they need to market G.I. Joe as the NON-SUPER hero. That's one reason it was so appealing as a 1980s comic book. It was an alternative to everything else that was out there on the racks. The heroes were just regular "Joes." You couldn't grow up to become Spider-Man or Superman some day, but you could become a G.I. Joe. They were still colorful and had interesting weapons.
At the same time, I think they need to look to Starship Troopers when it comes to Cobra. The movie risks looking like just another spy movie like Bourne, Bond, Mission: Impossible, etc. if the villains are also just ordinary people. Starship Troopers became a cult hit because its formula is still very uncommon, human soldiers fighting monsters. Cobra got more and more outlandish as it went on and that's what they need to play up. G.I. Joe should be fighting all sorts of monsters, mutants, etc., not just green shirts vs. blue shirts. It shouldn't look like a typical war movie, but carve out a very distinctive identity. Fighting a biker gang isn't going to cut it. You need CC, Destro, Storm Shadow and Baroness but they should be producing all kinds of freaky sci-fi threats. There's no way you make Joe successful with some fancy "reinvention." It was successful in the '80s because it had a perfect formula, one that is just as if not more relevant today. Marvel and DC heroes ruled comics but Joe carved out its own space. Now superheroes rule the movies. G.I. Joe can carve out its own space by being essentially exactly what it was in the '80s. Just like the animated Transformers movie was a flop in 1986 but they became hit live-action movies today, a live-action Joe movie that looked like the 1987 one would be a massive hit too. |

I think a live action version of the first mini-series would be a great movie.
Maybe add a 'special missions' show on Netflix to fill in gaps between movies and widen the cast. Mack from Agents of Shield could have been a great Roadblock.

If you want monsters then the HCU with Dire Wraiths and gigantic fatal fluffies should fit the bill.
The Joes are super heroes in a sense. They can do things normal men and women cannot, have unusual outfits, and weapons, and each has their own "super power" or specialty. The cartoon also had monsters of all sorts. Serpentor's first attempt, the monster in Castle Destro, The monster Mindbender created in "Presence of Mine Enemies" Dinosaurs, mutated Cobra troopers with animals in both Sunbow and Valor vs venom...BioVipers in Renegades...and on and on. There are many facets to GIJOE, I personally embrace the (superheroic) military aspect. Whatever we see in the future, we have known that Joe was a challenger brand for a few months even a year now. Perhaps we can get to the Nerf level someday. (really wish I could hear that webcast instead of elevator music)

Hasbro should form a partnership with Netflix and re-launch a cartoon. They did great with Voltron. I re-watch the series as well as both Resolute and Renegades.

That is an excellent idea. Someone call Larry Hama to pitch the new Joes to Netflix.
