If Joe was a Marvel property you have no idea if their creative vision would simply be the 80's story and characters. Even if Marvel bought Joe tomorrow that doesn't indicate it would be simply to bring back RAH and do that "justice." They could buy Joe and create a new story and characters which have nothing to do with RAH. I doubt that is what you mean by doing it justice. Last edited by backhawkdown; 04-16-2017 at 10:24 AM.. |

I know it's the same news, but I like seeing that it's still in the works. Hopefully the Hasbro Cinematic Universe will be a successful fun-run. A little nervous though knowing that the new GI Joe reboot will be the deciding factor on how far this new universe will go. We'll see...
https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/...omination.aspx A Hasbro Cinematic Universe? Hasbro wants to take a page from Disney's extremely successful playbook and use its vast store of intellectual property to create an interconnected movie universe, similar to what the House of Mouse has done with characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), like Iron Man and Captain America. The 14 movies in the Marvel canon to date have generated nearly $11 billion in worldwide box office and are the gold standard for such endeavors. Hasbro's version will kick off with a reboot of the company's moderately successful G.I. Joe, with the company taking "a more millennial approach" to the iconic character. If the reboot is successful (and that's a big if) Hasbro will begin to integrate movies based on a number of its nostalgic '80s toy favorites including Micronauts, ROM, Visionaries, and Mobile Armored Strike Kommand (M.A.S.K.). Part of what made Marvel's efforts so successful was respect for the underlying characters. In decades past, movies based on comic book characters had been low-budget fodder characterized by thin plot lines, empty dialogue, and poor acting. Marvel took a fresh approach by using proven actors and A-list directors, while providing punchy dialogue and relatable characters. Hasbro followed a similar path with its Transformers success, relying on bankable Hollywood director Michael Bay, who was known for his work directing such blockbusters as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, and The Rock. Award-winning writers at work In an attempt to recreate the success of its flagship franchise, Hasbro has assembled an impressive stable of award-winning writers to develop the scripts for its new venture. Akiva Goldsman, the Academy Award-winning author of the screenplay for A Beautiful Mind, will oversee the writers and serve as executive producer on the films. Other noted writers include Michael Chabon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay; Image Award-winning author Cheo Coker of Southland fame and showrunner of Marvel's Luke Cage on Netflix; Nicole Perlman, who won multiple awards as co-writer of Guardians of the Galaxy and is penning the upcoming Captain Marvel; and Brian K. Vaughn, Hugo Award-winning author of Saga, who has also won multiple Eisner awards. Time will tell Creating a cinematic universe is fraught with peril, as other would-be universe builders have discovered. Time Warner Inc.'s (NYSE:TWX) Warner Bros. Studios is several entries into its DC Comics Extended Universe (DCEU) effort, and while its movies have achieved box office success, they have been the subject of harsh reviews and rumors of behind-the-scenes drama. There was talk of a Ghostbusters effort, and another involving classic monsters starting with The Mummy. Marvel made it look easy, first building each character with its own solo effort, maximizing the use of the mid- and end-of-credits sequences to tease characters and connections, and finally building to the climax of an imminent threat that would bring the heroes together. Little is yet known about how Hasbro plans to proceed with universe building, other than the products they plan to include. Can a handful of cartoon characters be built into a franchise deserving of the title "Cinematic Universe"? Fortunately, Hasbro doesn't need to achieve the level of success exhibited by Marvel for its efforts to bear fruit. It may look like a long shot, but nobody could have predicted the success that Marvel achieved with what many saw as B-list heroes. Forget Hasbro: "Total conviction" buy signal issued The Motley Fool's co-founders, David and Tom Gardner, rarely agree on a stock. But when they do, their picks have beaten the market by nearly 10x on average.* That's why many investors consider their joint stamp of approval to be a "total conviction" signal to buy. The Motley Fool recently announced a new "total conviction" stock…and it wasn't Hasbro! |

From the EW article a few months ago as it pertains to the comics with Stitterson, in which several of the fears expressed in this thread became an issue, including Stitterson stating that politics would heavily play into the book:
"SITTERSON: Exceptionally frequently and exceptionally heavily. Especially given the current geopolitical climate, with the rise of multiple ethnonationalist movements, the troubling militarization of the police and our own president-elect threatening to start a new nuclear arms race. This was something that was very much on my mind, and there were a couple decisions made as a direct result of it. The first is moving G.I. Joe away from being strictly an American team. The Decepticon Skywarp is our first non-American team member, but there are already more in the works – human ones from real world countries. The other change is our choice to have the Joes use lasers. Not only is it a nice nod to the Sunbow cartoon series (which is where Giannis and I first fell in love with Joe), but it avoids the more ugly aspects of the concept. To me, there’s something grim about putting heavy-duty, real-world weaponry in the hands of these heroic characters. Our Joes prefer to solve problems without brutality, and they’re talented and well-trained enough to manage it. I actually think that G.I. Joe can do a lot more good in another way, by embracing what has always made the series great, going all the way back to the cartoon series, where people of all genders, races, and ethnicities willingly came together to accomplish a goal." IDW G.I. Joe: Creators take us inside Now, do I want to see EXACT copies of action figures running across the screen like a bunch of cos-players? Nah. However, they MUST have the important things; Bazooka- football jersey and rocket launcher. Flint - beret, shotgun and ammo suspenders. Beach-Head - MASK, vest, green/brown base colors, southern accent. Tunnel-Rat - little Asian guy, do-rag, face paint and M-60. Chuckles - blond, Hawaiian shirt, shoulder holster. You get the idea. Snake-Eyes, for example, IMHO was pretty much perfect in the movies. Roadblock? Not a black guy? Using a LIGHT machine gun? Ripcord? Not a white guy? No green camo? Could have been better. They tried the international thing with ROC and fans were in such an uproar that they changed it (even though the team did turn out to be international). And as has been mentioned, through the years the Joes have had Big Ben, Action Man, Red Star, Big Bear, Red Dog, Taurus, Sky Mate, Quickstrike, etc, etc. So I say put some of them in a movie. I was disappointed that there weren't more Joes in ROC and Retaliation, but good points have been made against too many Joes. They have a hard enough time now filling demand for good toys. STILL, as JediJones points out, they need to use more than a handful of characters. Like the cartoon, when the mission called for an underwater op, in comes Torpedo or Deep Six. Arctic; Snow-Job or Iceberg or Sub-Zero. Desert; Dusty. Etc. G.I.Joe is military, period. By thunder, the very NAME, G.I.Joe, is military! Never mind that EVERY member of the Joe "team" has a rank and a code name. Is there some back-lash against G.I.Joe because of it's military roots? Maybe. I've been in stores and heard parents tell their kids nothing "military" or "no guns." But there's also a lot of love and support for the military, so I think it evens out. Even so, that's about the toys. This thread is also about the next movie. War movies and action movies seem to see some level of success when done right. One of G.I.Joe's problems might be that, due to Hasbro's neglect, a spot-on G.I.Joe movie would just look like any other "military/military-type/video game/SHIELD" type movie. There's been many G.I.Joe-esqe movies, I think it might not stand out. Quote:
Marvel's success blended stand alone character movies together. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk all got stand alone movies then we're combined in The Avengers. With X-men you have Wolverine.
Hasbro needs to play their Ace of Spades in Snake Eyes and make a reboot based on him initially. The essential story elements are right there in the comics. 1) He goes on a rogue stand alone mission to rescue fellow future Joes who were disavowed after being caught in a foreign nation on a secret mission. Remember the Stalker, Snow Job, Quick Kick arc? This time North Korea perhaps? Definitely keep Stalker and add Scarlett in these roles. Gotta have the love interest right? 2) Flash backs to when Snake Eyes was a field operative with above said Joes in peril. Like the LRRP story line but this time in Iraq/Afghanistan. Perhaps in Iraq or Afghanistan said flashback crosses paths with a foreign mercenary or two who are obvious easter egg plugs for future villains like Destro or Major Bludd since we have file names. 3) A nemesis can be based on these Flashbacks as well. And it doesn't necessarily have to be Storm Shadow. Maybe ISIS or AL Queada had a bomb maker who became Scrap Iron. 4) Snake Eyes might have to have dialogue though, albeit just initially. Perhaps the movie's climax wounds him and he receives scars and damage to vocal chords? A katana slash from Storm Shadow, shrapnel from Scrap Iron, etc. Finally, because his rogue mission was so successful the US decides to create a super secret team of special forces. Movie ends with dossier with "GI Joe" stamped across front. Roll credits. Quote:
Finding similarities does not make a logically sound argument when you ignore the many more differences that exist that do not equate to equal comparisons.
Beauty and the Beast wasn't a success because they didn't change anything; in fact that has been the one constant complaint of the film. It was a success because Disney has made the property continuously relevant for 30 years, continuously building new fans and audiences on top of older ones, something Hasbro has not done. That is why the Joe films have failed. Not simply appealing to one segment of Joe fans isn't why the movies failed to connect with the rest, and much larger, audience. There hasn't been a cartoon on basic TV running for more than ONE season in years! GI Joe comics (sad to say) aren't as popular as they once were. They haven't had a descent toy presence since ROC in 2009!! And those toys sold so poorly, it almost ruined the entire line. Their target audience for a movie should be in their 20's to 40's. Most younger than that won't know a lick about G.I.Joe. Quote:
You probably were not around during the release of the 2 garbage G.I.Joe movies that Hasbro and Paramount put out. The first of which was a film about accelerator suites and Cobra Commander being the wimpy little brother of Baroness which director Stephen Sommers tried to call a G.I.Joe film, and ended up being a mess. And that doesn't even mention Marlon Wayans being in the film. This was Hasbro's last attempt at a 'progressive' global take on G.I.Joe.
Which led to a really wonderful dump of G.I.Joe figures in all black uniforms into every retail store that didn't sell and led to retail stores not wanting to take a chance on ordering G.I.Joe action figures anymore. If only someone had the guts to tell Mr. Wayans "sorry, no, you can not play your favorite, he was white. You'll either be white in this movie, or play Stalker. Period." And yeah, you're going to give your most high-tech, multi-million dollar prototype suits to the two NEWEST guys?!? Hasbro, in their infinite stupidity, made G.I.Joe a movie line. No movie = no toys. It's no coincidence that, after everyone that carried both movie lines had to clearance them out, G.I.Joe became a TRU exclusive. NOBODY ELSE WANTED THEM! Let us not forget just about EVERY SINGLE TIME Hasbro tries to change up G.I.Joe was a flop; Super Joe, Sgt. Savage, G.I.Joe Extreme, small Sigma 6. After the failure of each of these, Hasbro went back to what has worked for decades: 12" and 3 3/4". I remember seeing a video when Hasbro first showed the Resolute cartoon to a live audience, and when Cobra soldiers were killed, the crowd's reaction was very positive. Then need to incorporate that into the movie. Shoot, if they made the movie exactly like Resolute, I'd be happy. Everybody looked the part! You knew who was who, yet they all had a uniform military unit look. ROC and Retaliation weren't exactly "A-Team" quality, but people want G.I.Joe to be somewhat violent. It doesn't have to be "Punisher: War Zone" level, but some people gotta die. I mean, one guy's got katanas, one guy's got a .50 caliber machine gun, and a couple other guys have MINI-GUNS. Somebody's gonna bleed. And it better be the "terrorist organization determined to rule the world", not some intergalactic invaders. That's been over done. Cobra is not your average group of bad guys. They have tech, they have money, they have an army, they have skills, they have greed. For the Wolverine and Deadpool movies, one could make the argument that those were what people wanted to see in the comics when they were reading as kids. But if Hasbro wants to use a movie to help a toy line, it's got to bring in kids, introduce them to G.I.Joe, and make them want to have their own adventures, so to speak. The down side, as others have pointed out, is that by letting the line fade away over the last few years, Hasbro has to start from scratch. Someone mentioned that new movie named "CHIPs." I looked it up; it fizzled. My guess as to why, would be that it was "CHIPs" in name only. Now, I didn't watch the TV series, but I've seen bits and pieces, plus it's listed as a "crime, drama, mystery" on IMDB. I saw commercials and trailers for the movie. It looked like two total clowns trying to stop crime. A "CHIPs" movie in name only. So I'm thinking fans of the show would avoid it at all costs. Quote:
And I think they keep G.I.Joe at a minimum because sales were bad....because G.I.Joe was at a minimum! I've said it before; Hasbro's and/or TRUs distribution was so bad on the first wave of 50ths, MANY collectors ordered that and following waves online, leaving store stock...well...in the stores. Thus the clearance of the 50th sets (except the last wave, they'd learned by then) AND some 2-packs hitting TJMaxx, meaning TRU canceled part of their order. Marvel Studios taking G.I.Joe? They are apples and oranges, yes, but apples and oranges are both food. G.I.Joe and some Marvel movies have things in common; above average good guys fighting above average bad guys trying to take over the world. Marvel did great things with their movies; true enough for fans, enough of an origin for new people to know what's going on and who's who without reading the comics for 5 years. If they want to try G.I.Joe, let them. If they use the same formula, it will be awesome. Plus, they can't do worse than Hasbro. So, as many in this thread have proposed, maybe we'll at least get some good toys out of a movie, no matter how good/bad/ugly it might be. Though chances are, we'll get mostly repaints in a cost-cutting measure from Hasbro.
