Ok well .....damn. Ummm ok fine but can we at least get a good Arah cartoon series then ? As far as toys for future movie lines , I don't think im going to want future hipster duke. This is why I pray to Zeus that hasbro renews FP contract post 2018 so there is at least one organization that cares about ARAH.

I say go MASH style TV series. Focus on comedy, set it in the realm of the last few years of the War on Terror. The main characters will need to shift to either a supply Depot, command Bunker, but more of a support unit. I would think, Mainframe,Dial-Tone, Big Lob, Firewall, Doc might work. Then like MASH Gijoe can make America come to terms with the realities of War, in a sort of thinly veiled light humor sort of way.
Then every so often sprinkle in a full on Battle episode full of action that blows you away. Snake-Eyes, Beachhead, Roadblock, Stalker. One that will keep people talking. They take on a new terrorists every week. Drug dealers, hijackings, Somali pirates, bank robbers, embassy rescue, POW rescues, Down pilots. Not sure how best To fight Cobra you might as well set it in some Fake Eastern European, Eurasian, Middle-Eastern fantasy land Boravia, Trucial Abysmal, Darklonia, Latveria, Trans-Carpathia, Kalistan. Basically Copy Agents of SHIELD. Humor is key though. You could switch to a more A-Team like series. Lots of cheesy one-liners. .

Now the point that the comic writers brought up that really changed my view was this: How can a kid be excited to read or watch a cartoon about soldiers when their father; uncles; neighbors and other people in their community are coming home from real world combat with the real effects of war and combat. As they said it "it is tough to get excited about GIJOE when your dad has lost an arm or leg or didn't come home at all."
This absolutely shocked me to the core. I hadn't before considered that playing war would be so unappealing to children but it made absolute sense. If GIJOE needs to change to be relevant; successful; and socially conscientious for this new generation, then I can accept that. I will always have that great time from the early 80's that I belong to and I will hope for a future where young children are untouched by the sorrows of combat and can feel comfortable with military toys. |

I'm going to wait until I hear more before I break out the torches and pitchforks (or the confetti, for that matter). This all seems pretty boilerplate to me and doesn't tell me enough to come to any conclusion. As long as the toys are good, I'll probably be on board either way.

At this point I have really low expectations on any future Joe movie.
This does reek of some kinda sj reboot with politicaly correct dialogue and very little fighting. Just a bunch of cyber war hacking. If its not based strongly on the sunbow cartoon I wont be into it and thats fine. Just please dont change the figures from our beloved 4inch line to some 6inch line or worse some electronic base figure with some kinda crappy interactive app. If that happens I would be devastated And what the f*** is a head snap? Is that millennial enough for you? I agree with RV88 though. Just please keep the figures at 1/18 scale with the same articulation and sculpting style as POC or later ME figures. I wouldn't mind civilian's being released too.

Good, I'm glad they're going for something new. For all the bitching and moaning people do about ROC, it was a standard Joe story, it just changed a couple details and costumes. Retaliation made the mistake of trying to copy the source material too much.
G.I. Joe would benefit from a new mythology. All new characters, with new stories that cranky 40 year olds won't whine about the slightest changes to. ROC did a great job of showing how GI Joe was so secret that not even the people that were considered for the team knew about it. That works great for the team, much like how the IMF is in the Mission Impossible movies. If they could make a movie something like those, with a little comic book flair, it could breathe new life into the name. |

I wish they would focus these resources on an animated series rather than a movie. But a movie, even a bad one, is better than nothing. At least we'll get some product out of it.
I hope they do the SE/SS story and relationship better. I feel like its been off, like three times in a row. In the movies and Renegades, they split up so young, its hard to believe they had time to develop any real history together, not to mention enough time to learn enough to become the Jedi-tier ninja they're portrayed as. In Resolute, SS's just a dick. All of his motivations are fueled by jealously and ambition, and that's not to say these qualities have no place in SS, because they do. But SS's also supposed to value honor and tradition, and none of that came through in Resolute. If we get ninja involvement, which we should if they're looking to draw in the kids, SS should have a better reason to be with Cobra, whether its for the sake of his clan, if he actually believes in Cobra's plan, just something more than jealously or revenge. Those can be part of it, but shouldn't be all of it. |

But maybe it's not a movie at all. Maybe it's a reality show hosted by Big Brawler.

I hope that the next G.I. Joe movie, and future G.I. Joe product line does well.
Maybe I am misunderstanding the comments in the article, but it sounds to me like SJW, or University of Berkeley styled talk. I will be so glad to be eventually proven wrong about my interpretation. Like everybody else, I want to see a great G.I. Joe movie!

That isn't really something that should be shocking to the generation that grew up with ARAH in the 1980's. We couldn't throw a rock and not hit a house that a Veteran lived in, Vietnam, World War Two, Korea even some World War One vets. A large number of our fathers were drafted for Vietnam, so it's not all that different or shocking. We saw constant reminders everyday of the cost of war and still grew up playing with GIJoe and loving it. Not to mention the whole Cold War thing and living with the constant fear of nuclear war. Thats something no one has to worry about today.
At the same time, G.I. Joe was NEVER a serious military brand. When people talk like that, I'm assuming they're people who were never fans and never watched the original show or read the comics. They just see the name "G.I. Joe" and make assumptions about it, or still have in mind the 1960s military dolls. G.I. Joe was, like so many action series then and now, based on James Bond, with a healthy dose of Star Wars sprinkled in. There was no more interest from the public in "war stories" then than there is now. That's one reason everyone expected the comic book to flop. No one read "war comics" anymore. We all know that the imagery created by the name "G.I. Joe" was NOT what the 1980s writers based their stories on. The crazy James Bond-y, Star Wars-y villains took center stage, ninjas dominated the comic books, and the cartoon dealt with crazy sci-fi technology-driven plots to conquer the world with a healthy sprinkling of campy humor. G.I. Joe was a VERY unique brand. For these morons to dismiss it as some kind of outmoded military-themed storyline is like people lumping Indiana Jones in with outdated cowboy westerns because he wore a hat and rode a horse. Speaking of Indiana Jones, his 2000s movie also made a lot of money by trying to copy exactly what they did in the '80s. Jurassic World just pulled off the same thing. And so did Force Awakens. And now Beauty and the Beast. See a pattern? Also keep in mind that G.I. Joe used terrorists because people were terrified at the time of a standard nation-state vs. nation-state war with the Soviet Union. Terrorists were seen as a more fantastical threat. Although there were lots of terrorist incidents, they were all overseas. Even Back to the Future used Libyan terrorists as its own comical bad guys. So it was a combination of terrorists being topical but also NOT being the main international force Americans felt threatened by. At the same time, Cobra grew into something so bizarre and unique, it bears little resemblance to any real terrorists anymore. They are pure comic book villains now and shouldn't make anyone feel uncomfortable. Quote:
One of THE most unique things about G.I. Joe is just HOW MANY characters there are. It had the TV show record for most recurring characters before The Simpsons. Whittling it down to a Mission: Impossible-style force ruins the brand. There should be wall-to-wall characters, sort of like the X-Men's mansion at its most crowded times. The special thing about Joe is that you never know which characters you'll see going on the next adventure. And they all had drastically different backgrounds and personalities. That's what separates Joe from all the other action series. I'm afraid to ask which dating app Switch Gears was using. |
