Well that blows, they could at least let people know what is going to be at K-mart, we don't even have those within hundreds of miles of my location....They should have picked Big Lots/Ross instead of K-mart...w t f

Well, I'm sad about the no-Viper pack news. I was planning on going a little nuts with that one. I'm calling that the Footloose set is going to be Mission Brazil-- with Dialtone, Mainframe, Leatherneck and Wetsuit, and Footloose in the place of the inexplicably renamed Claymore.

Were damned if we do and damned if we don't. Support the movie to get what we want, if the movie does well they think we liked it and that will be the future of the franchise. If we don't support the movie then everything stops.

The only way Hasbro will know what to make is what sells, so only buy what you want.. if the movie line tanks, yeah it might take a set back to the stuff that does sell but they are still a company and they have never killed GI Joe permanently and I doubt they ever will.
If you like the Movie stuff then buy it too, if you don't.. just get what you want.. simple.
No matter what we do, say, write, protest.. we are not going to be able to run Hasbro the way we want it run... unless we actually buy them.

The truth is there is a LOT of new tooling for RoC that may be used for Footloose & other classic characters, possibly Sgt. Stone.

If this has been said, it needs to be said again.
The GI Joe Movie to firmly and solidly reintroduce GI Joe to the mainstream crowd as a currently-relevant not-just-80s-nostalgia brand and franchise, which GI Joe needs a little more than Transformers [which had the same public-eye entry in 2007 -- also via, whaddyaknow, a Movie]. As such, Hasbro is going to be pouring a lot into the Movie, everything they have, in fact. all the eggs are in this basket, so to speak. Marketing logic means that that was never ever going to change in the slightest, including running the Movie toyline concurrently with even a smaller non-Movie 25th-centric line which would ultimately prove to be a retail distraction.
*Retailers*, who have the biggest say via their orders, are going to want purely Movie Movie Movie stuff, because that's what has a BIG direct fiction/promotional tie-in. [Whether WE like the Movie or not is a different matter.] It's a GOOD sign that everyone, even back-from-the-dead K-Mart, is asking for exclusives, because that shows they have faith that people will buy this stuff.
If not the Movie, what ELSE does have a media presence that'll sell the toys? [Let's not get into "if the toys are good, they'll sell!" -- it's 2009, that stuff isn't good enough on its own anymore for the numbers that they want to make.]
Let's see our options. Resolute? Limited Internet-only minicartoon. What's that you say? "Produce more Resolute, then, and put it on a tv channel"? First off, a tv channel has to want to broadcast it depending on market interest, which is to be generated this year by the Movie. Secondly, consider the time gap between the time Resolute was first announced and when it came out -- that's the wait from this point for another iteration of Resolute. And they haven't even gotten a final decision on what to do about more Resolute or how to go about it -- everything 2010 is still in the planning stages as they focus on executing the Movie.
Well, what about the original cartoon, upon which 25th/Modern Era relies? You can't run a full-blast million-dollar toyline based on nostalgia generated by season-set DVD sales. This is one of the whole points of the Movie, which is to give the current populace an entry to the brand as something current that they will buy stuff for.
The reason they keep talking about the Movie line is that for better or worse, in 2009 [and maybe early 2010], the Movie *IS* GI Joe. As a toyline, specifically. So everything, EVERYTHING, has to be on a Movie card for it to be a relatively easy sell to retailers [remember what I said about no other/sub-line distractions at retail?] -- whether it's an actual ROC character like Duke or Destro, a 25th/Modern Era character like Monkeywrench, or something from Resolute like Gung Ho, Destro or Roadblock -- they'll get a ROC logo slapped on somewhere, get put on a Movie card, and that's the main way for them to be released AT ALL from the looks of things. Disadvantage to that? They're not on the same card as your earlier figures, aww. Advantage to that? They still get made, even though the same production dollars could be spent on more of the main Movie cast.
They're NOT purposely responding to "demands"/"clamors" [which is most cases is just, well, loud typing] for 25th/Modern Era/Resolue stuff by saying "Yeah yeah yeah, maybe, now how about buying some of this Movie stuff?" Everything is merely going to be dressed up as Movie stuff for the year. The closest thing I can offer as evidence is some Walmart exclusive Transformers figures, which were planned to be in Transformers Universe [the 25th anniversary homage toyline for that brand], were put on Movie cards and made Movie characters despite not being Movie molds and being part of, and fitting better into, another line. All at Walmart's request. And this was in 2008, almost a full year AFTER the Transformers Movie first hit screens.
Making the fan-demanded stuff direct-to-consumer, online store exclusives, all that jazz -- I'm no expert on these matters, but profits from there are likely to be pale potatoes compared to what could be made from the same stuff in store shelves, which is where a lot of the money is going to be and thus is where they have to focus their efforts [never mind the overhead saved by not having to commission and print the separate packaging style and promotional strategy a subline would call for].
If all this makes Hasbro sound like they're just out for money at the expense of "all else" [which, for most people whose responses -- and even QnA questions -- I've read, is "what I want"], well... they SHOULD be out for money, because that's what keeps the brand strong and able to return in various formats [some of which, shock of shocks, you might even like!].
Well, that's that.
Anyhoo, this was fairly informative as QnA's go... lots of should've-been-released stuff has gone back to the "release format" drawing board, but I'm pretty sure we'll still see most of them. Arctic Cobra Commander, Scarlett [was this the one in Quarrel colors?], Mercer. Someone misread it and thought he'd be a convention exclusive, when the statement was that they'd announce the other upcoming store exclusives, which preempted the Viper pack, at the conventions. [i found it funny that they mentioned that some fans were getting tired of Vipers, which is true.]
and damn, Footloose! Now I can have Storm Shadow drop a pillar on him!
Check out my feedback here!
