I think that team needs a couple more members. You can't write a great script with just a couple dozen people.

Mr. Goldsman has won an Oscar along with 4 other awards, has been nominated 14 times and has a long list of accomplishments underneath his belt. Yes, he was a writer on Batman and Robin...but if given the choice, would you prefer that Mr. Chu come back? |

It doesn't matter how many or how few writers are on the team if they don't honor the source material, it will make marginal profit, and go the way of everyone else who thinks their concept of GI Joe is better than the source material. Why do the Marvel movies make so much more profit? They honor the source material.

Not sure if serious?

Now, I'm not saying that they've gotten G.I. Joe right on film--furthest thing from it--but this notion that if they only follow our beloved comics, it'll be wonderful is flawed. I'll say this right now, having recently re-read some of the comics, they're pretty stupid, as comics generally are (especially 30 year old comics). Pretty much just soap operas for kids/the geeky adults we grew into. I don't want a movie of that. |

The problem is, the "source material" often doesn't translate well to film. It's a different medium that reaches a much broader audience than a comic could ever hope to (that's what most mean by "source material") and that means changes have to be made. What fans tend to want is some direct copy of the comics onto film, which would more often than not be horrible. You bring up Marvel Studios as an example of doing it right, which they do precisely by not slavishly holding to the comic line. They take plenty of liberties in not just story, but with the mythos itself and in smaller things like costume design. They do this for a reason and they're really good at creating a compromise between the comics and the realities of modern cinema.
Avengers 1 is one of the most celebrated superhero movies around, but at its core is an immensely mediocre alien invasion plot. The character dynamics, lifted from the comics, are what makes it great. If that was the plot of an Avengers comic, it wouldn't even crack the top 50. Quote:

This part is especially amusing considering the most respected superhero comics are just about 30 years old.

Any source material translates well to film when done right. Those who claim otherwise are Hollywood types who don't understand/respect the source material in question and people who believe their BS. Early superhero movies like The X-Men pussed out on things like costumes and codenames because they "didn't translate well". That has been proven wrong many times since.

I hope you weren't referring to G.I.Joe comics. This part is especially amusing considering the most respected superhero comics are just about 30 years old. |

Just make a movie based on the MASS Device miniseries. After it is a huge hit, make a sequel based on the Revenge of Cobra miniseries.
