That is funny! G.I. Joe needs a descent cartoon for starters with quality artwork and storyline; a good video game would be nice also! When a new toy line is coming out; Hasbro needs to advertise with Youtube and other online sites! Put out toys that people actually want; with P.O.C/30th style imagination behind it (..the Retaliation Ninja Combat Cruiser has all damn kinds of potential with paint scheme and room for more weapons with the additional peg holes)! -Imagine if the G.I. Joe/Hasbro would have kept pumping out new & well thought out vehicles like we received with the P.O.C/30th style VAMPS and H.I.S.S tanks; like a new slightly bigger Mauler with moving treads, new Silver Mirage, new Dragonfly modeled after the USMC's Ah-1w Super Cobra and Ah-1Z Zulu Cobra? Pump in there some re-releases that will get people excited like a Cobra Moray, G.I.Joe Hovercraft/Whale, a revamped Cobra ASP that can fit modern Cobra troopers but looks like the original, the P.O.C Ashiko Cycle with retooled parts and repainted in Cobra colors w/ side car & guns, G.I. Joe Thunderwing (..repainted) and Night Attack Chopper (..repainted & reengineered in the back so it can hold modern figures in the back)! Every SDCC & Joe Con should be showing off new Joe product period! Make a few of those vehicles from the comics and cartoon that were never made; people get excited for new stuff! G.I. Joe/Hasbro has competition now with True Heroes/Chap Mei vehicles, 1/18 scale BBI Elite Force, World Peacekeepers Power Team Elite, Acid Rain, Lanard the Corps; these companies are just capitalizing on the stuff G.I.Joe/Hasbro is not making like vehicles that can actually hold some figures & has big time play features for kids! I do not think it would hurt to do a six to seven figure trial run of G.I. Joe Black series style quality figures! Do comic pack two packs like they did with the 25th Anniversary; make the comic an interesting and enjoyable read (..especially for the kids who do not know what G.I. Joe is about; this is a way to break the ice with them)! Have your iconic bread and butter figure/characters but give other characters more lime light; Spirit Iron Knife Tracker, Dusty, Tunnel Rat, Low Light, etc.! Put out an encyclopedia for the G.I. Joe/Cobra universe like the Marvel and D.C Encyclopedias (..this is another way to get kids and adults engaged again)! More cartoon DVD movies like Resolute; I was left wanting to see more after I watched this!

If they treat the line like they want it to live, they can get some serious returns on the investment. As it is, they are so far living a self-fulfilling prophecy. They think the line will die, so they short it on resources and imagination, so the line dies...just as predicted. It's tough to find 1/18 figures with articulation these days and I won't buy the stiff-armed, stiff-legged Star Wars Episode 7 figures they are trying to cram down our throats right now. An articulated, interesting, and VARIED selection of figures alongside vehicles that they can fit into and have good play features while maintaining a realistic look (or, in the case of Cobra, a quasi-realistic/futuristic look) would be unrivaled in the field today. They just need to generate interest among children again without dumbing things down or making awful Eco-warriors types of choices.

Yeah, this is something I've never really understood... Military games are consistent best sellers, and many of them incorporate sci-fi or near-future themes. I could name a dozen games that could be called "GI JOE," even without changing the plot or gameplay. You could seriously just write "GI JOE" on the cover and call it good. But more importantly, from a business perspective, we now see video game franchises that branch out into multimedia, including their own toy lines. And they're highly successful. GI JOE wouldn't even need a cartoon or movies if they cranked out titles the way Ubisoft cranks out AC games.
But the basic premise extends beyond just video games. Hasbro doesn't do enough to support GI JOE as a brand. Everything I've seen suggests a big part of the current doldrums are due to "Retaliation." Paramount really, really screwed Hasbro over by delaying the movie at the last minute, and retailers soured on GI JOE because of it. This isn't even about the quality of the movie itself as much as it is just bad business. |

The only mature shooter game to really "hit it big" has been Halo, and even then, hardly commands the shelf space Transformers or even Power Rangers do. The average age of video game consumers is 34, who are NOT likely to be buying much, if any, toys for themselves. Plus, if you remember Avatar, just because something is a hit in one medium (Avatar remains among the highest grossing, if not THE highest grossing, films of all time, yet its associated toyline was a MASSIVE bomb) The most successful GI JOe iterations, from ARAH to NuSculpt to even Sigma 6 (yes, it WAS successful) operate under the premise of a superhero team under the guise of military fatigues (superheroes without superpowers). That is NOT what Call of Duty, Sniper Elite, or Battlefield are. Quote:

Ironically, 1992 (the year of Eco Warriors, Sound attack, DEF and Ninja Force) was specifically cited by Kirk Bozigan as the second highest selling year for GI Joe behind 1986 (with such realistic offerings such as the HAVOC, Thunder Machine, and Serpentor). Truthfully, at this stage, I think Hasbro is pretty much in the spot where they are going to HAVE to let collectors go. To make a toyline and brand iteration where collectors are barely a tertiary concern. Completely new fiction, completely new scale (or a non-traditional scale), different aesthetics, less articulation, SOMETHING that is a break from the same old thing they've been doing since 2007! At this stage, with NO retailer aside from TRU seemingly interested in GI Joe, they really don't have anything to lose. And should that new effort fail? Well, I'm sure they can squirt out another round of kitbashed, repainted, and rerun figures for all the collectors to enjoy. Transformers and Star Wars fans (at least until recently) did not get the awesome stuff they did between 2005-2011 by merely appealing to collectors- through compelling media they captured the imagination of kids who drove sales to the point where Hasbro COULD be adventurous and try things that would not have flown in earlier years. GI Joe needs to create that compelling vision, get KIDS back onto the brand, and THEN work to satisfy the desires of adult collectors. And if that means collectors have to suffer a few years of "GI Joe: Adventure Heroes" with 2.5" 5 POA figures, then so be it.

They should have hired me to be a consultant. I would have done it for free.
1. Reissue the USS Flagg. 2. Buy the rights to Call it Duty, no matter how much it costs. 3. Make a fifty figure troop builder pack. Then when hasbro complains all my ideas tank and say I'm a terrible consultant I can reply "eh, you get what you pay for"

I just hope Hasbro will eventually devote some resources towards making the G.I. Hoe brand relevant again.
