This jumbo line is a tribute. Gentle Giant gets it. This is a business. There are proposals, meetings, planning sessions. There are people who's entire job is to calculate cost versus profits. They UNDERSTAND HOW TO MAKE PROFITS. These people don't enter into a venture without knowing the benefits and risks. These aren't people selling out of their trunks. But, apparently, next time they really need to consult all the armchair analysts who know so much more about what "the fans really want" before you dare make any more figures. Gentle Giant - contrary to some reports - aren't trying to torpedo the line or have no clue what to do with a license. I say kudos to Gentle Giant for having the cajones to do something other than re-treading the same five fu**ing figures. Thank you, Gentle Giant, for Giving us a straight arm Zap.

Rob- while I appreciate the original "Class of 1982" for their significance, it is undeniable that, big-picture, especially outside of the hardcore G.I. Joe collecting community, many of those characters don;t have the popularity and recognition that many other characters do. I can name 40 figures that would easily sell better than Zap. I'm not an 'armchair analyst-' I have been a G.I. Joe fan for years, have collected for 20+ years, and buy and sell toys for a living. I'd like to think I have a good handle on G.I. Joe, and popular culture in general. For a line to succeed, the initial offerings need to sell well. Zap will not sell very well. Even among the original '82 characters, Zap is one of the weakest choices.

It must be about cost of production: the reuse of parts, and the simpler construction / fewer parts needed for straight arms vs. swivels. I like the character selection, but it is probably not the best choice from a marketing perspective. So that's why I'd guess production limitations. And they are still pricey. I am very into them, but probably cannot swallow that pill.

I guess my take on this is that if someone buys Zap then they are going to buy all of them, because Zap is nobody's favorite. Zap buyers are already all in. Why not start with some characters that attract 'single buyers', build up the line and save Zap for later?

Even with straight arms, the Cobras would sell great. And if they're already open to the idea of doing Scarlett, with no mold re-use, why no talk of the Cobras? CC is the obvious one since both helmeted and hooded would probably be their bestsellers.

Honestly, I'd love this line to be a success, but I have some serious doubts.

LOL, because toy companies are always run by brilliant businessmen who understand their market perfectly and never, ever make a mistake. They're staffed by some of the most brilliant minds out there, much smarter than billion-dollar corporations like Disney who make dumb moves like losing hundreds of millions on flop movies like John Carter and Lone Ranger. Unlike some of the biggest, most successful companies around, toy companies never make mistakes that hurt their profits.
Will you still be saying that if Gentle Giant released a Jumbo Blowtorch 3 or 4 times in different packaging? Quote:

The comics were 013 for a long time. These are targeted at the nonvocal fans who loved the 013 from its roots. We will have to wait and see if this line is successful enough to complete the 013. Last edited by JediJones; 05-27-2015 at 09:44 AM.. |

Bring on Snake Eyes! January '16, I believe I read. Can't wait until they knock out all 5 and then show us what's next.

Joker and Robin are the big well-known brand names after Batman himself. That's the Batman line so Green Lantern's not an option.
Hobgoblin wasn't in the first wave Secret Wars. He was a rarer later release. But definitely popular with collectors. I wanted it badly back in the day, but times have changed and I don't look back on low detail vintage figures with the same fondness I had for them at the time. |
