First, with respect to the marketing: you have to remember that Paramount has THREE huge movies they're pushing for the summer -- G.I. JOE, TRANSFORMERS and STAR TREK. I read an article recently that the studios combined advertising budget for the summer releases will be -- get this -- one BILLION dollars. The issue for Paramount is how to maximize revenue for each of their films -- and putting competing advertising out there for each of their films (which essentially target the same audiences) is a tightrope act. Thus, they're focusing on STAR TREK until its release, and I fully expect that they'll be doing the same for TRANSFORMERS (there really hasn't been a lot of advertising for TRANSFORMERS thus far either, and it isn't because the studio doesn't believe they're going to make a hell of a lot of money on that movie, because they do) after that. There will some G.I. JOE advertising leading up to the release of TRANSFORMERS -- and then I expect Paramount will begin the big push for the release in August, at which point G.I. JOE will be the one and only film they're pushing (at least it's the only one targeting this specific demographic that I'm aware of).
Paramount is clearly focusing the majority of their marketing around Transformers and Star Trek. And its pretty clear which one they feel has the least priority right now, just like what happened with THE INCREDIBLE HULK. What was the excuse there? "We are waiting to deliver the right campaign and it will be huge." It wasn't really. Quote:
With respect to the RISE OF COBRA thing... Well, it's about the rise of Cobra. Which is to say, it doesn't look like Cobra is really going to be around until the end of the film. At which point they will have risen. But you won't see a lot of trailer footage from the end of a movie, generally (when I do, I'm usually pissed about it).

I gurantee the live action G.I. Joe movie will be on the same level as the following garbage: Catwoman (2004), Judge Dredd (1995), Steele (1997), Elektra (2005), Supergirl (1984), Fantastic Four (2005), Superman IV (1987), Batman & Robin (1997), The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003).
So, if you enjoyed any of the previous selections, there's a chance you'll also enjoy G.I. Joe, but for most of us... well, I think you get the picture... |

I don't know if it will be as bad as most of those movies you listed (may be as bad as F4, which is the best out of that bunch listed above). I think the movie will be worth seeing once in the theater and that is about it. I'll go see it opening weekend, but I am keeping my expectations at the absolute lowest. Good for 2 hours of mindless action but not worth watching a second time. I bet there will be some cool scenes in the movie, but a lot of scenes will probably have us slapping ourselves in the face with our palm or just cringing in pain (the dialogue in the movie appears to be pretty awful). It will be fun to talk about this movie when it comes out (negative or positive), that is for sure!!

I've heard things like this before. But Star Trek we still got a teaser in like late 2007.

And its pretty clear which one they feel has the least priority right now, just like what happened with THE INCREDIBLE HULK. What was the excuse there? "We are waiting to deliver the right campaign and it will be huge." It wasn't really. People seem to want to believe that the studio thinks it'll fail -- I've seen people claim that the August date was a dumping off point for the movie because they think it's going to fail at the box office. That's rubbish, of course, since the August release date was set since before production began, and if they thought it was going to suck, they could have decided NOT to dump $170 million into it at that point, instead. You need to look up what "strawman argument" actually means (it may be one of the most overused phrases on the internet right now). Perhaps you want Cobra to show up earlier in the film, and that's your prerogative. The fact is, though, that the film can be about the situations that led to the formation of Cobra, and that the culmination of those events happens at the end of the movie. Thus, the film is accurately called "Rise of Cobra," even if Cobra only shows up in the last second of footage. |

I'd argue that they're clearly focusing their advertising on STAR TREK. We had a Superbowl spot for TRANSFORMERS and a trailer. That's about it -- but that's about to change after next weekend, too. I expect that we'll see the same thing for G.I. JOE after TRANSFORMERS.

Would any of you watch this movie if it had nothing to do with G.I.Joe? I mean if it was called "Lazerhawks" or "Attack of the Guys in scary armor" instead of G.I.Joe would any of you, based on what you've seen so far, be the least bit interested in this movie? Bad CGI work, shoplifted action shots, wooden dialogue, and a C level cast = FAIL in my book.
I have taken off the nostalgia glasses (Since Paramount obviously has no reverence for it either) and completely separated this hunk of garbage from G.I.Joe. What I'm left with is a lowest common denominator sci-fi action film that I wouldn't pay $5 for in the value bin at Wal-Mart. |

Bad CGI (It's hard to tell about the CGI until you see the finished product), shoplifting action shots from movies that people liked (transformers was a box office hit, you want people to think they are similar), wooden dialogue (it's a 2 min trailer), C level cast (who knew the cast of Star Wars before it was released). A bunch of A level cast in one book does not automatically make it a good movie. These are just my opinions, as I plan on holding out judgment on the film until after I see on opening day. |

I think that is the issue here for everyone who thinks those who are hating on the movie just do not understand we have looked at it without the GI JOE glasses off or the Logo or mythos and we find it to be utterly off the mark and so James Bondish/X-menish it is not even funny, it is just liek 50 million other shows exaclty plotted out out in the same fashion. They had a chance here to BLOW everyone away and failed. Remove the GI JOE logo and you loose its over appeal by 400 fold.
Again if this was Just Rise of Sigma 6 or something to put it in it's place in the Joe universe I could carelss and would not be so vehemetly opposed to their interpretation, But seeing as they want to destroy everything about the product with this new vision which will in turn force Hasbro to make toys based soley upon the new vision of the movie, I just severly depresses me since I loved what we had up to Resolute and can see everything just going back to the way it was in the late 90s and Joes go back to being useless ugly garbage. They had a huge win up thier sleeves and I guess the economy shit on that. I dunno why it is so wrong to be so disappointed with this movie and say something about it....it makes no sense. It will suceed if people choose to go watch it and I am sure it will be number for a weekend at the box office just like every other show (till Siskel gets ahold of it) but it will just leave a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths and I hope it does so Hasbro will see the error in thier ways that people will not just take it to take it, there is still time for them to correct this mistake with Resolute, but I fear they will sit back and hope they don;t run off to many people who will support this stuff AFTER the movie airs. I hope the 25th modern era/Resolute can pull through, if this movie indeed ends all of tht as we know it, it can all be put in shipping containers and be sent back to a smelting plant for all I care. |
