Its' not a matter of whether it "works" on screen or not. Technically Hollywood could have made everything spot-on accurate to the 80's Joes. But clearly they do not believe that such an approach would appeal to general audiences for one reason or another (as I've said before, most likely because G.I. Joe has lagged well behind other "nostalgia brands" in terms of popularity and sales over the last 10-15 years...I think only Masters of the Universe has done worse of the major 80's boys toy brands).
Of all the examples you list, the ones that were "changed" were highly successful (Transformers, Spider-Man), and the one that was "most accurate" (Hellboy) underperformed/was not a blockbuster hit. Hollywood goes with what they "know." Past history has shown them that making changes to these properties doesn't hurt the box office take and may (or may not) actually boost it. I think it's unrealistic to expect that Hollywood would break an established pattern for this specific film when it's worked for them on many others. Even many of the films that are considered "more accurate" to the source material still have considerable changes made to them. G.I. Joe seems to lean on the more extreme side of "changes being made" but in all truth I don't find it departing from the source material any more than Transformers did. Let's also not forget...most of the "pop culture" use of G.I. Joe these days is as a joke/punchline that calls back to how campy and cheesy the old cartoons were...particularly where Cobra Commander is concerned. |

Neither of them were "bombs" but neither of them were "big hits" either. And certainly, neither of them made the kind of money that Transformers or the X-Men franchise has. |

Even many of the films that are considered "more accurate" to the source material still have considerable changes made to them. You could go down the list of movies that were based on pop-culture that were horribly mangled and badly conceived: Super Mario Bros Street Fighter Garbage Pail Kids Mortal Kombat 2 Superman 3 Batman & Robin 2002's The Hulk Star Wars Episode 1 Now I do agree that sometimes change is good and it's interesting to see how the film-makers bring certain properties to life; but other times they tend to take too many liberties with the license. I still hold a faint hope for this film, I want it so much to be good. But based on what I've seen so far? As a GI Joe fan? I'm not exactly enthusiastic. |

I'm only talking about financial success here. (2002's Hulk and Episode I both made quite a bit of money...particularly Episode I), not the quality of the films.
Because financial success (and the opportunity to grab it) is what drives most of Hollywood's decision making process. |

Yeah, sorry about that. Of course, Paramount were none too happy about us giving away so much of the storyline. I don't think we broke any copyright laws, but, ya know, better to be safe than sorry. It's still out there using the wonder of the interwebs though!
