G.I. Joe #3 Review Alright first off, in my review of the last issue, many of you on the forum thought that this issue would feature Snake Eyes. Some of you saw the variant cover as a clue to his involvement in here. He isn’t in this issue at all. The PIT has been invaded, and Destro’s devices are running amok, terrorizing the joes. Duke and Beachhead run towards the source of gunfire, followed by a blonde, machine gun toting joe who might b e Rock ‘n Roll. Hawk realizes that the devices didn’t breach the PIT, and that they were already there. At this point he sees a soldier next to him with a gun. He orders him to give up his gun so that he can use it, and says “come get some!” This is distracting because so far, Hawk has shown a strict demeanor, the phrase doesn’t sound like something he would say. He seems more like a battle hardened general when he doesn’t shout out cliché phrases. “Come get some!” is a phrase I would expect in an action movie, not from the General Hawk we have seen in the IDW books prior to this issue. The gunfire that the joes aim at the devices isn’t doing much but distracting them. At this point Rory and Glynis’s view from the device monitors is obscured, by Brainstorm using a fire extinguisher. This temporarily blocks the vision sensors before the device can use it’s sonic sensors. At this point the joes slap on some charges and blow one of the six devices up. Rory and Glynis plead for help from Destro but he is still being held at gunpoint by The Baroness. We find that The Baroness is not an assassin for hire, but a core member of Cobra, and that Destro’s actions have gained Cobra too much undo attention. Destro’s negotiation with The Baroness isn’t going well so he commands his pet Clyde, to attack The Baroness. Clyde doesn’t last long. Back in the PIT, the joes try to find out why they have been infiltrated. Brainstorm realizes that the attack has been a decoy, and that the real target is the old server farm in the missle silos of the PIT. While Rory And Glynis try to utilize the rest of the devices remaining, they ask Destro once again for assistance, but Destro is still fighting the Baroness. As the joes speed towards the server farm, more devices are destroyed, and some of the joes start screaming “yo joe!”. Yes this is a G.I. Joe book, and yes that phrase is typical, however it felt campy and I don’t think it was necessary. It reminds me more of a cartoon aimed at children as opposed to a book for an older audience. Brainstorm explains the importance of beating the devices to the server farm. The server farm contains all the information on the G.I. Joe team, everything from personnel info to strategic info is contained there. Spiking the drives from within the PIT is the only way to get access to information on G.I. Joe as it’s a closed system; not on any grid or net. Unfortunately while Brainstorm explains this to Beachhead, Rory and Glynis have managed to invade the server farm with their remaining devices, and start decrypting the stored information. The joes make their way to the server farm and one device runs away through a duct. However it is near oxygen and fuel lines, so the joes hold their fire. Brainstorm is extremely worried, because if the device is able to reach the surface and go outside the GPS blind spot, it can transmit the location of the PIT. |

This is actually more of a synopsis or retelling than a review, unfortunately. Read this, and there's no need to buy the book except for the art. How about doing reviews that have a little opinion in them, not just giving a Cliff's Notes recap?

Eh, I thought the review was good. Anyhow, In my personal opinion, I feel the entire Joe comics line is already off to a poor start overall. Just like w/DDP, I think they're trying too hard. Don't need to start off w/tough catchisms and tough actions. just grow it organically. Again, just my humble opinion.

Just bought this book today and read it on my lunch break at work. Have to say I was kinda disappointed in this one :( To me it is just a filler issue. Meaning nothing really happened to push the story forward in this issue. The fight between the Baroness and Destro is only given a few panels and seems kinda of out of place in this issue because not much happens with them by the end of the comic. Issues #1 and #2 were great comics ! This one just stays in one place and never goes anywhere :(

yea, it's a mix of review and synopsis.
Overall, definitely a filler issue since 90% of the comic takes places in a few rooms of the PIT (with an occasional cut-away to the people controlling the bots from DESTRO's lair) and a minor scuffle between DESTRO & the BARONESS. This was basically a gun fight filler issue with not much substance. I like the ORIGINS better (even after one issue) and think it will eventually be a much bigger hit amongst the hardcore G.I. JOE fanbase. issues: cover a, b, & the incentive cover. Last edited by QBERT; 03-21-2009 at 06:14 PM.. |
