G.I. Joe #2 Review
This review may contain spoilers. In this issue we are introduced to a new Joe named Brainstorm. We see him in the experimental weapons lab of the PIT, designated sector 9, and nicknamed the “fobbit(non-combat personnel) hole”. Brainstorm and his crew use the Broadcast Energy Teleporter(BET) to power a boombox. The BET greatly amplifies the signal range of the boombox. It’s broadcast field folds space while sending energy over unlimited distances without loss of ampage. General Hawk doesn’t seem too impressed, but tells Brainstorm to carry on nonetheless. He and his crew happily decide to return the other boomboxes back to the PX/BX and burying the trashed ones. This is one of the first fantasy elements we encounter in IDW’s G.I. Joe series, and it’s a surprising touch. It isn’t over the top, nor campy. More importantly, I can definitely see the joes using the BET’s power to great use later on. We find Stalker, Recondo, and Leatherneck in the Philippines, on the trail of Nico. The joes are unfortunately there during monsoon season. Nico was last seen in issue #1, running driving away from his mansion after an assassination attempt on him. The art team did a great job of conveying the rain in these panels. The colorholds and splash effects are done well without distracting the eye, and maintain good visual clarity. It is very easy to overdo special effects in scenes like this, and I’m glad that nothing was overdone here. Snake Eyes is seen in the distance, on the rooftops while Stalker and crew follow Nico by car. The only distracting aspect of the dialogue here, is the broken English of Stalker’s cab driver. Duke is irritated because Stalker’s team was sent after Nico, instead of his team. The tension between Duke and Scarlett is quite evident here, as it was in the last issue. Duke knows that Snake Eyes is AWOL and unofficially following leads for Scarlett. At this point, we still don’t know why there is tension between Duke and Scarlett. There doesn’t seem to be some sort of love triangle here; more like Scarlett not having much faith in Duke. We are introduced to another new joe named Labrat. The gun that Snake Eyes found in Nico’s mansion last issue has been analyzed. Turns out that the gun is free of metals and composed of plastic polymers as well as ceramics. It is surprisingly deadly; capable of firing thin polymer needles on a stream of compressed air. Scarlett and Labrat try to figure out the purpose of the gun but are stumped. The gun is also disintegrating. The powder that was sent to Scarlett by Snake Eyes was also analyzed. It is also missing traces of metal. Minerals, proteins and acids all in the same ratios as in the human body are found. Seems like the threat has increased, as the joes are possibly up against a biological weapon, which can destroy it’s own evidence. The mysterious device that the joes retrieved in the last issue is looked at by the fobbits. Now, we finally see who has been monitoring the joes with this device. The device feeds to monitors in a castle. Here we are introduced to Destro. Destro notices Brainstorm and recognizes him as physics professor who was said to have died years ago. It turns out that Destro only wanted revenge against the American agency who ruined the Istanbul deal, shown in G.I. Joe #0 & 1. However he has stumbled upon something bigger. He decides to hold off fighting just yet, and to continue spying. After Destro goes to the M.A.S.S. lab within his castle, a diver infiltrates the sewer of his castle. Once her diving suit is removed, we immediately recognize The Baroness. The colorholds and saturation are used to great effect here, accurately depicting the view under water. Brainstorm notices that Destro’s device in the PIT is in standby mode, and since he is confused, decides to sleep and check it again in the morning. Meanwhile the device awakens; different sections of it with moving legs start traveling around the PIT. Destro and his servants realize that their device is in a military base. They can’t get a fix on the PIT’s location since the signal is cloaked, however Destro suggests boosting the signal. Looks like the BET may not help the joes after all… In the PIT, Sparks and Bankshot appear briefly before Bankshot is shot up by one of Destro’s devices. In the end, we see The Baroness holding Destro at gunpoint; and acknowledging that she knows his true identity. This issue provides much to look forward to in future issues. Destro’s devices have become his trojan horse in the PIT. For a covert organization, G.I. Joe gains more threats facing them, as at this point, we don’t know if Destro has his own intentions, or if he is working for Cobra. The joes haven’t figured out who Cobra is, we don’t know who The Baroness is working for yet, and the evidence that Scarlett has is disintegrating. We find more resistance and reluctance from Scarlett to support Duke. The new joes such as Labrat and the fobbits are made for good purposes. The threats against the joe team rise, and this issue proves to be exciting as we see the odds start stacking up highly against them. |
