Well, you see, some people like Dial-Tone. Therefore making his character (and likely a related figure) female instead of male is annoying. Much like anyone who liked any other character would be less than pleased were they updated to a different sex.

Since is a codename, maybe the true Dial-tone is running around with another codename. What if Mainframe is now ol' Dial-tone, and this gal take the Dial-tone codename? After all, Mainframe was killed in the other comic line (spoiler: though he appear is one of the new comic packs :P ) |

IDW is a reboot, that means anything that happened in the old comic lines doesn't apply. And the Mainframe comic pack is based on old Marvel continuity. So it's no spoiler. The comic pack comic was done just to spotlight the characters in the comic pack, and it was just done to make a Dataframe (the new name) figure.

And many of us remember that we can't get classic Cover Girl or Ripcord figures because of the changes made for the movie and we now fear that if any Dial Tone figure is made it will be female and we won't GET the classic version to stand with our 25th display.

I personally think Hasbro will eventually make a classic Rip Cord, Cover Girl and Dial Tone at some point in the future. They know we like these characters and want them made in their classic look. I would bet the farm (assuming Joe is still around in 2010) on Hasbro making Cover Girl and Rip Cord in 2010. We just got two five packs that have characters that are in the movie that don't look anything like their movie appearances. Also, we are getting figures based on their Resolute and classic appearance so I don't see why we can't get a character (Dial Tone) based on their new comic or old, classic appearance as well. (I blame these sentiments on Hasbro because awhile back they stated that it would confuse buyers if they made two different versions of Cover Girl or Rip Cord. Yet we are still getting some characters in both incarnations).

I know that GI JOE has never really distinguished, in practice, between "communications" and "computer" specialists, esp. because the "communications" on the cartoon amounted to fancy then-futuristic computers with videoconferencing. And, maybe there isn't much of a difference in today's military for the same reason.
However, technically, Dial-Tone is a "radio communications" specialist, whereas Firewall is a computer expert. As far as I know, there are only three actual radio specialists: Breaker, Dial-Tone, and Dee-Jay. I agree, however, that IDW should not be making "new specialists" for areas that already exist. We don't need a "new ninja" by any means (in fact, while Hasbro embraced "Kamakura," there were several characters from Ninja Force that were never used in the comic and could have been used instead of Kamakura). Firewall and Mayday at least gave the team more female specialists. However, following the "Reloaded Doc" idea, they should have given her the name "Dee-Jay," since Dee-Jay was a) "dead" in the previous continuity, b) only seen once in action figure form (with a recolor or two), and c) a minor character overall. On the other hand, that might be considered too close to "Lady Jaye". . . . Of course, I haven't even read the issue to see what role Dial Tone plays in it. |

But maybe they'll keep that (mainframe being dead). Actually, it was kinda confusing, when Diego had to do the job, we talked about the charcter and found he was dead... "wtf? he's dead or not?" "well, this could be before he died" "but these are the new stories..." "oh...well, is an hologram" "then how he switch the buttons on?" :P On the other hand the comic pack of Tunnel rat is from resolute line, to make things more confusing. That's why Shipwreck is different than the normal one LOL Quote:
I completely forgot about the WHOLE comic pack about Mainframe. :P Oh well, he appears sans the helmet, so if someone wants to do a modification... |
