The youth of today SUCKS....bunch of little huts in a long line called type II diabetes b/c atleast the ones i am always around don't go outside and play...prolly b/c not any motivational, hint hint, cartoons after school or on saturday mornings to look forward too and role play......off topic yes, but deserved a honest reply ....and yeah my wife and I don't have kids....by choice mind you!! LOLLOL
Kids today can look forward to watching Maury and that Steve dude who always beats up his guests. Saturday morning is now filled with that I/E crap, so I turn on Centurions on Boomerang, But I showed a kid at Target tonight a Tripwire figure and he wanted it instead of Bakugan. So there is hope that the line will attract a new generation of kids. But joes are some of the coolest toys in the action figure aisle and kids have yet to discover it. |

I thought I'd add another tidbit to all of you chiming in about kids today...here is the bombshell: they are not that different from 80's kids! In fact, they are quite similar. I spent a lot of time around 9-12 year olds in a Youth program this summer and picked up some Joes during a lunch break with them. They were drooling over the 25th stuff. Boys really don't change much in each generation, they like play guns, army guys, sci fi, games (risk, video games), etc. I think Hasbro is way off track with this new stuff, it's not timeless, if the new line stays like this then Joe will certainly turn into another fad (like Sigma 6, Extreme, Ninja Force). That's what Crystal Ball told me anyways, and he would know!
*I'm also a dad of 4 kids and they know what sucks without any of my help, believe me, kids are not stupid and they know when a product is talking down to them.... EXACTLY!! This whole argument about future generations for GI Joe, blah blah, blah is flawed. Kids are smart. They know when they are being dumbed down by products. This whole notion of kids and their "play patterns" is ridiculous. Kids have no imagination so lets give them electronic sounds. They can't pretend a gun is shooting so lets give them firing missiles. How many of you honestly believe that if Joes in 1982 had shooting weapons and the vehicles had lights and sounds, we would be having this conversation right now? I guarantee you it would have went to the wayside like Sgt. Rock, Eagle Force and all of the other figure lines that lasted a year or two in the early 80's. GI Joe was so successful in it's heyday because IT DID NOT cater down to kids. It was a kids toy, for sure but it was treated as an intellectual property not a testing ground for new gimmicks. There was a sense of quality, realism and integrity behind the 80's Joes that Hasbro has forgot about and has yet to recapture. There was a sense of stability and everything fit into place. Mindless repaints aside, the 25th line has come the closest to recapturing the magic of the original line, but it seems to me for every one step forward Hasbro makes, the product takes 2 steps back. For every good product we get, something wacky and nonsensical comes out that makes the line as a whole look bad. You want to get kids interested? Give them a solid foundation to build on not a toy line that features the "gimmick of the week". |

statesofeuphoria, i must thank you. Along witht the principal messages that what we play with teaches us, you are right on the mark. Read "homo ludens" (it's latin ya freaks) on the nature of play and how it shapes the perceptions of the individual. Imagination is the key to play after all, the joe universe is a vehical for that.
