I can understand Bro Job requesting removal of images, but verbal descriptions? So they don't want people to TALK about the shit either? Time for more shots of haterade, line 'em up. I'm running for office in this bitch.
Why not just delete every thread and every word that refers to the movie at all? At this stage, I think I'd like to pretend it doesn't exist anyway. Last edited by Barefoot Jedi; 01-30-2009 at 03:52 PM.. |

I defend the marketing and product development of Hasbro, but the idiocy of this is astounding. what did they think was going to happen when they revealed the toys (unless they made guests sign an agreement that they were only going to be allowed to see the toys if they did not speak about them). |

Why can't evil people just be evil? Why do they always have to have a tragic backstory that explains away everything? It's always bugged me that writers feel the need to over-explain things.
Still, regardless of what I read or hear I will reserve judgment until I actually see the film. |

Still, regardless of what I read or hear I will reserve judgment until I actually see the film. most people who are bad aren't simply evil. our motivations aren't shaped in vacuums, we are the products of our experiences. for the most part, a villain who is just evil for evils sake is far less frightening IMO because they become one-dimensional. like I said, the Joker in TDK is the exception. |

because that doesn't generally work in movies. sure, TDK pulled it off brilliantly, but that is like saying since Michaelangelo could paint his ass off all artists should be able to as well. it doesn't work that way. characters are better when they have depth, and backstories provide that, in addition to drama and contrasts in characters.

The Joker works without motivation, and that is partly due to his character. We know something happened to him, but we don't know what, and as Alan Moore once wrote, "We never should." A villain such as the Joker, played brilliantly by Mr. Ledger, is a thunderous plot device, who can be sympathetic one moment, then literally shoot and rape your daughter the next. read "The Killing Joke" to see what I mean. Back on track though, I am all for a new "interpretation" of Cobra Commander, and I kinda dig his personality in the script, just not the origin. I know this is closed minded, but I always saw Cobra Commander as the guy who led a gang, he wasn't the biggest, the smartest or the most skilled, but he knew how to get people to his side, and he knew where to hit. |

I have to agree here; The Joker is SO evil, SO dark, SO twisted, SO beyond explanation...that any attempt to really explain his backstory is doomed to failure. There clearly is a story there, behind him, looming over what has made him into what he is...but that is well handled by the different stories he tells about his own background (thus acknowledging but parodying the 'villain created by his childhood or experience' archetype). Cobra Commander, Destro, The Baroness...they are not the Joker, nor should the movie try to make them so. They need/deserve a backstory. Making a villain evil for the sake of being evil is ultimately rather unsatisfying in most senses.

Both were outstanding performances. Truth be told, he's probably the most "professionally employed" actor in the entire lot asides Quaid...and Quaid has done a LOT of bad movies.

Its better than shots of fanboy follower dorkade.
Hasbro needs to lighten up and hope this movie does well.
