After having read both issue 0 and issue 1, I've gotta say I like where this is going. In fact, I'll put out there that if it continues on the path it seems to be going, IDW may, FOR ME, tear down Marvel as the best Joe comic run.
It was a great start. And I also absolutely hate the 'start off slow and explain who everyone is' approach. Even many films have stopped doing that now. Origin tales in that style are boring and tedious. Jumping into the action and slowly introducing you to everything may start you off a little confused, but it's also a tried and true tradition that's been used in novel-writing for a LONG time. How many novels have you read where the writer opens the story with a glossary of character names, bios, locations, etc? Lemme think -- none. It's just NOT good storytelling. The way IDW is doing it is simply flat out good writing. Except Duke saying 'bro' too often. That got on my nerves by the first time he said it. As for the vehicles, I think it works. After all, Joe is military FANTASY, not military reality. Perhaps their 'retired' vehicles are retrofitted and redesigned internally. That actually would make a lot of sense. The Joe team would need a LOT of discreet funding to work, right? So a good plan of action, whenever possible, is to take out of commission vehicles and turn them into something useful. Way less expensive and risky than trying to get the government to just buy you a bunch of brand new planes. Then you add things like the Ghost Hawk or whatever they're calling it these days, which you can take as new experimental vehicles the military is developing that the Joes get first crack at, that perhaps scientists within the Joe organization designed themselves. It can make sense, if it's written correctly. Can't wait for issue 2. Oh, I do have one beef, and it isn't a sex change to a random C-list character that I don't care about: Wraith. Or whoever busted into that villa before Snake Eyes showed up. Did he seriously dissolve into a puddle of ectoplasmic goo? What was up with that? It really seemed jarringly out of place in the story. Perhaps a little too sci-fi, even for G.I. Joe. If Cobra needed to send a badass assassin or two, they have plenty of semi-normal ones that aren't completely lame. Hell, I'd prefer to see Slice and Dice over the armoured dude that apparently can turn himself into water, or whatever the hell that was all about. |

It will be interesting to see how IDW handles storytelling and marketing G.I. Joe toys. I read the Marvel run like many of you did (but skipped out on the DevilsDue and other runs), and know the first part of the run from #1-60 were pretty solid storylines (as well as some of the Special Missions and Yearbooks). It was later in the run that it seemed they were just advertising the latest Joe toy release (just look at the cover to tell who or what was being marketed). I picked up Issue #0 and now #1 since I have been collecting the 25th line for the last two years and thought reading the comic would complete the reboot of my childhood (along with the cartoon Resolute which I am anxiously awaiting). Here are a few of my rants...
How will IDW balance a reboot of the story and marketing product for Hasbro? The first two issues (#0 and #1) have been pretty low key in this respect, paying more closely to storytelling than product promotion, which is a good thing. The fact that many of the Joes come out in fatigues and generic wetsuits and are only recognizable based on being spoken to or having their name taped on their breather makes you care more about who the character is than the uniform. I think the only Joes who come out similiar to their 3 3/4 form are Scarlett, Duke, Snake-Eyes and Hawk. There are some subtle changes to their garb, which might be a negative for the collectors since it probably means a "comic version" of overdone figures like Duke, Snake-Eyes, etc. But I felt like I was gettting to know these characters all over again, in more modern setting. Another interest I have is how the story will relate to the information on the file cards. Only Marvel came close to matching the stories told in the cards, but still only provided a surface level of characterization. Will the IDW run do the cards justice or will it be a complete reboot? Time will tell. I don't have a problem with Dial-Tone. I have a strange feeling that she is going to be cannon fodder at some point when they bring in her "twin brother", who assumes the Dial-Tone codename from that point on. I do wonder why Duke is a bit young in the main title - I expected maybe in the origins title, but not here.

I mean I LOVE Skystrikers... but is it realistic for them to be used considering that model of Jet has been retired in the modern military?
So either way, I can see why the joes would still be using a Tomcat based Skystriker, just not so sure they will be. Just because something is retired does not make it incapable of fighting today's battles. The Commanche was cancelled, as was the YF-23. Both, highly capable aircraft, exponentially outclassing the aircraft they were meant to replace(AH-1 Cobra & F-15 Eagle), and in many areas, better than the competing planes(the YF-23 was stealthier, faster, and more aerodynamically sound than the YF-22, the YF-22 won the ATF competition on account of practicality and that Lockheed was in better shape than Northrop, not facing delays with stealth aircraft). Even the proposed upgrades and new build advanced Tomcats would have been better than the Super Hornet. Tomcat 21, ASF-14, Quickstrike, et al. Tomcat 21 would have been the more likely candidate as it could be built from existing F-14 models, and the improvements to it far outclassed the improvement jump in capability that the Super Hornet possessed over the Legacy Hornet. If the IDW joe books use the YF-23, or F-14 as a Skystriker, that would be fine in my opinion, so long as it is not a plane like the Super Hornet. Tomcat 21 is even a fine modernized Skystriker, not much cosmetic changes, but a HUGE jump in capability:supercruise(able go cruise supersonically without needing to turn on the afterburner which consumes a ton of gas), a better precision strike fighter than the F-15 Eagle, thrust vectoring, and much more!

Agreed. I see your point and it doesn't bother me, besides it might mean we will get a retooled Skystriker eventually.

So,
I just got the time to read my copy of issue #1 and let me say I loved it. I have been an avid reader of Gi Joe since issue one of the first Marvel Volume. I also like the review that started this thread. I had a coupole of thoughts. On the dialogue, the military doesn't also keep up with the current slang. So, cut the writers some slack as the lingo is prolly still current i've been out a while. But, check up from the neck up is probably still in heavy rotation. Of course what I really want to hear is that bird of Shipwreck's calling somebody "$#!+ for brains", "Wingnut", or "$#!+bird". Some real Navy speak. I have to go back and read again tonight but I do not remember seeing a time marker or date stamp. So, do we know what year it is? The F-14 might still be seeing major duty in the time stream these Joes live in. But, my biggest comment is who gives a crap about some minor character's gender. Heck in Battlestar Galactica's reboot that changed Starbuck into a chick. I hated it at first because I loved that character and the Boomer character. But, I ended up really liking the show. If BSG can do right with big changes like that I am sure the Joes will be fine if Dial Tone is a chick or if Ripcord is black? That stuff just doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things as long as the story telling stays strong. Anyway, I can't wait til next month...I haven't been this excited about a comicbook since Stalker was trapped in SG and Kwinn bought the farm!!! Oh yeah, I bought all the cover variants while ya gedunking (a nod to my shellback brothers out there you know who you are)!!! |
