Looking at those pages, i thought the same, the style has a certain independant style. But that's mostly because Paul Gulacy has a particular cinematographic/dramatic style, much like Jim Steranko or P. Craig Russell (i'm old school or what?? ). He's not the standard comic guy, he puts lots of thought and tries to create certain atmosphere. While not the most realistic style, you won't forget his big eyed exotic women , the heavy shadows, and careful thought of combat scenes. I see "Dixon/Gulacy" and some classic drawings with badass script, and I'm really interested. I see a bunch of Image Joe-superheros, and ran away. Quote:
Look at the pages and you can see this guy draws everything, there'sno trick or photoshop, pure heart, sweat and talent on his work. You can't say the same for... well, much of the other Joe art :S

I have to agree here.

Why couldn't someone more familiar be written as that leader?

Why? Because they aren't using the same damn Hawk, Duke, and Flint command structure?
I'm not overly familiar with IDW Joe, but I would assume Mainframe was chosen because of his position within THIS version of Joe. Just because he was a c-lister in prior series doesn't mean they haven't take his (much more relevant today) specialties and run with the idea. And as far as I know, the only major media that even touched that was Resolute (and MAYBE DDP, not exceptionally familiar with that run) IDW didn't start with something familiar and take us new places, they started with a confusing mess and continue to random elements to the ever churning blender. Scarlet was never a strong leader, but as been one, above Duke, in IDW sense day one correct? As far as Scarlet being an item with someone? it's either Duke or Snake-eyes (only once a bit of both) and once a bit with Ripcord. Change in doses is not only acceptable but great, but somethings are risky to touch and when they have changed so much already, and so fast, taking away anchor points make it less and less like Joe.

I don't like the sound of this at all.
Focused on plot with little character development? Wonderful... Why even be GI Joe then? Part of what makes Joes so special IS the colourful characters and I find military situations when all the talk has to be 'tech and situational-talk' incredibly boring. That's where Larry Hama excelled was in blending the two elements. Tom Clancy-like writing is boring and might as well not be GI Joe.

He's got a real independent comics style of art which I don't think is suited for mainstream books.

I got all of IDW's original Special Missions rereleases and am looking forward to this newest incarnation as long as it keeps faithful to the original version. A no nonsense, kick butt, "government don't acknowledge you if you get caught" action type format. And the Baroness looks hot on the cover

I have not read any Joe titles since the Marvel run but, I may start again. I liked the original Special Missions and this new series sounds as though it will be full of action, espionage and intrigue. Sounds like a good mix. I may buy a few issues to see how it develops and I may read up on some back issues as well.
