I feel the same. In what ways do you think they mishandled? I'm always curious to think about the what ifs. I personally feel when they started leaving their realistic military roots is where they started messing up.

As for BBTS, no matter how much we all bitch about their prices, there's always someone that will pay it to get what they want. Me, I ordered the whole set from GIJCC. Do I want all of them, no. But, what I do sell (at cost) will cover for the shipping, insurance and all other fees. I get the ones I want, and others can get what I don't want, WIN-WIN for me. |

Interesting that they've priced Quarrel at $44.99, as I thought I was the only one who wanted her.

There's also a great deal of validity to the Core Character concept: Manufacturers want kids/new collectors to be able to go out and get "the main characters" at just about any time, thus making the lines friendly to new collectors (and explaining why core characters get the most repacks/recyclings). From that point of view, having a few pegwarming core characters is actually somewhat seen as a GOOD thing. Could you imagine trying to start collecting say, Star Wars and not being able to find a Darth Vader figure because they only shipped "two second screentime" Cantina aliens that month? It'll turn people off straight out of the gate. The problem comes when lines stop selling well enough that the abundance of these characters starts to pile up and prevent other characters from reaching shelves in good numbers. Hasbro tries to throw longer-term collectors bones when and where they're able, but product glut and whatever the heck is going on with distribution often make it a trial to find them. This isn't unique to G.I. Joe by any means, or even to Hasbro. Last edited by Jmacq1; 12-04-2012 at 11:37 AM.. |

No, the "core character" mentality for action figure lines wasn't really started by Hasbro. It was started more by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers of all things. Hasbro just eventually followed suit.

This isn't unique to G.I. Joe by any means, or even to Hasbro. you have 48 in a case you can toss in a couple of last years Duke and Cobra Commander. or luke and vader if you will. Then you dont wind up with several Dukes that rot on pegs while Alley Viper and Lowlight fly off the shelves. I (notice I said I) dont need or want 100 new figures every year. I would be happy with 20-30 new figures (carded and vehicle drivers) on the retail front. Yes I know its not the 80's any more. perhaps it may be better for Hasbro to just do the core characters only. collectors would bark but kids may not. give us Duke Scarlett Baroness Destro Cobra Commander Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow every year kill everybody else off and just have plain joes and plain troops (Retaliation anyone?) Leave the remaining Joes not done yet up to the club and etailers. I wonder how well that model would work? (not being sarcastic)

I got in on the pre-orders for Boa and CG early. I think $45 and $50 respectively. Boa is gold, but I just can't decide whether or not I should let go of CG. She's just a bad figure, and it's one of the few times, maybe one of the only times, I'm considering holding on to a figure because of the cost/value ratio. And I don't like that at all.

People seem to really underestimate the amount of hold that retailers, particularly Wal-Mart, have on companies and the choices that are made when it comes to how a product line is handled. If you don't believe that Wal-Mart can sink a company, you're greatly mistaken.

Exactly, almost two years and still no Kwinn. I'm at a point that I don't even care anymore. I'm tired of Hasbro showing us stuff and then tell us to grab our ankles. If Kwinn gets released (which I know it'll be a SDCC exclusive) I'll get him. But he should have been released already, and at retail, like they said they were gonna do.
