The theory behind the set in general IS a good value, but you nailed the hammer on the head with the second part when you brought up five different Serpentors.
7 figures and 3 vehicles for $63 is a GREAT price. But not THAT mix of figures and vehicles. I had posted that if they made just two simple changes, substituting a Tele-Viper for Cobra Commander and a BAT for Destro, that this thing would sell much easier, because people love army builders, they love BATS and they love Tele Vipers, and Hasbro still gets the value or repacking. It's frustrating. I don't mind any of the vehicles really. It's just... how many Steelers, Destros, Cobra Commanders and Stalkers do I need? Meh...

Talk about perceived value, diminishing marginal utility (a fancy way of saying consumer perception of value at retail costs) and everything else just is a moot point. Those who can, will and those who can't or won't will bitch. It's the nature. I really didn't feel the need to have yet another stupid Hiss Tank are a 4th or 5th Destro/COBRA Commander, blah-blah-blah....but because I do support the line overall and want to see it flourish I did my bit (actually my business partner bought it as a birthday gift in all truth) and it was purchased at retail. I've been doing it all along, and will continue to do so. Sorry if you don't feel the same way. Actually, that's not true. Diminishing Marginal Utility is not consumer perception of value at retail cost, it's the diminishing value to the consumer of another of the same item. The difference between the two concepts is that, for example, if the only Destros and CCs we have seen were from wave 1, and that was it, and this were also the first HISS produced (And let's say they colored it black), this set would have a much higher value to the consumer. Why? Because people would have a lot fewer of the same product. I can almost garauntee that nearly no one would be complaining if wthe example I just gave were the case. I honestly believe for the sheer amount of plastic you get, the UBP is not a bad deal at retail price, or wouldn't be if it weren't comprised of rehashes of items that were already overabundant. If this is what Hasbro is using to test market larger ticket items, than their entire marketing department for this line should be fired for terminal stupidity. I personally don't think that's the case. In fact, I think the only thing we would signal by not buying this at full retail price is our unwillingness to continue to buy repaints, which may force Hasbro to consider adding new content to the line. Hopefully their marketing department has determined this. If not, Hasbro should hire me instead, since I have an MBA, and an ounce of common sense. |

I think $40 is a fair price. I'll wait until it's $40.

My wife and I were in Target the other day and I saw this displayed. They only had one and it was $62.99. I agonized over spending $65 (tax) on this thing. My wife talked me into getting it and said Merry Christmas. I really don't think it was worth the cost. The original $49 price would have made more sense. I don't see alot of people being willing to shell out $65 for the set.
If I remember right, The Flagg was around $150 back when it was released. Wouldn't it cost around $400 now? I can't see that ever being re-released again. The Terror Dome (Which I think was around $50 originally) could be re-released but that price tag would probably be $150 or $200. What do you guys think? |

I think the cost of the Flagg and Terrordrome depend greatly on how many parts of the original molds they have and how much they have to recreate. The more original tools they have, the less the cost as those tools were paid for 20+ years ago.

I know this thread has moved away from the original post of announcing a sale, but just wanted point something out to watch for. Store Manager's sales.
I was in 6 Targets today, and only one had them marked down to $57.99. That store had an entire endcap full of them and more in the feeder shelves. I know $57.99 is not a big deal, but don't be surprised to see store's try to clear out their stock. Between now and the next week or so, most people (especially parents shopping for their kids) will have gotten most of their Christmas gifts. If the UBP doesn't move now, stores will be stuck with them after Christmas. I got mine already, but I'll pick up another one if I can get it on sale. |

I have a whacky thought on how Hasblo could sell the USS Flagg. What if it were sold in pieces? Similar to a build-a-figure? Do you think collectors would be more willing to purchase it in segments, like the MASS Device dvd battle packs?
I never owned the Flagg, so I don't know how it went together or anything. I'm just throwing this out there... |
