Its' very easy to say that you'd pay for a big ticket item without having ponied the cash for it. Until an item like a Flagg or 'Drome hit's the shelves, you aren't going to be able to do so, and those items are never going to hit unless you support the line at retail and at full retail prices now. Everyone wants a bargain, but at what overall costs?
Apparently several of you missed my second paragraph which suggested picking up the individual items from this set you did want at a markup, but overall lesser costs from a secondary retailer. Instead of shelling out $62 for a set you only want 1 or 2 items out of, isn't it better to purchase those same items seperately for $25 or $30 so that you have what you want without the extra outlay and baggage? Or is that something you want to opine about too? Talk about perceived value, diminishing marginal utility (a fancy way of saying consumer perception of value at retail costs) and everything else just is a moot point. Those who can, will and those who can't or won't will bitch. It's the nature. I really didn't feel the need to have yet another stupid Hiss Tank are a 4th or 5th Destro/COBRA Commander, blah-blah-blah....but because I do support the line overall and want to see it flourish I did my bit (actually my business partner bought it as a birthday gift in all truth) and it was purchased at retail. I've been doing it all along, and will continue to do so. Sorry if you don't feel the same way. Last edited by Alyosha; 12-10-2008 at 09:34 AM.. |

A word of caution to some of you guys, if you want something, buy it. "Waiting until clearance" is one of the things that really killed the 12 in GI Joe line (especially in regards to 40th Ann stuff). If you don't support a line at retail and at retail prices, and it constantly goes to clearance, it's not going to last.
I'm sure you'll argue "it's too much, I don't have the money" and if that truly is the case, then you shouldn't be buying Joes with your cash anyway. For those who don't feel the value is up to standards, then your better off picking up the single pieces you need from the set. Exactly. $62.99 was a tad much, $50 would have been a better price to start with. But yeah, need to buy at retail or the line will go away. Nothing wrong with exclusives either. It's a hit or miss thing. Some will do extremely well, some will do okay and some will suck eggs.

Each Target is different. It all depends on the toy department manager. They can mark it down if they want to get rid of it. If you were to inform the toy manager at your target that at a specific target they are marked down, and he/se can verify it you might get lucky. I heard a few of em' being marked down to $40 already. I'm gonna try to get mine adjusted b/c $62.00 is to much for that set.

Exactly. Another good point by Alyosha. I'd love to have a Flagg or a 'Drome. But then again I wouldn't because I know how much it would cost at retail. If the Falcon was $130, the Flagg would be easily around that. 'Drome would probably be around $80 or $90.

I agree that supporting the line is imperative, but if the line is offering big ticket repaints, sorry, many of us who have been forking out the cash all along to buy all this once don't want to pay big bucks to do it again. I am also waiting for clearance on this, at least 50%. If I don't see it at that price, I won't buy it (particularly since I already own at least one version of 90% of what's in the set.
I really think UBP was designed to entice people who have not been collecting right along. It's an end cap "hey, look what's back" type big ticket Christmas item for grandparents/moms & dads to buy for their grandkids, not a "must have" BMF type item. I'm sure they are expecting the completist collectors to jump on board as well, but I really think this is intended as a "battle in a box" type item for new people to find and discover the line. If it doesn't sell until clearance, I don't think it will have that much effect on the rest of the line. It's cheap repaints, that's all. |

Its still not a good value for the money. You can argue all day long about how everyone needs to buy this to support the joe line but the pack itself sucks. I would buy a flagg or terrordrome but not this because it simply has no interest to me. When Hasbro does this sort of thing they need to ask themselves if they would buy it amidst everything else coming out right now. Repainting things just for the sake of repainting them and making them exclusives is not the way to test the waters on big ticket items. If they released a set of 5 serpentors and made them different neon colors and charged $100 for the set, would you say everyone must buy it to support the line? That's nonsense and hopefully you see the flaw in your argument.
Bottom line, this set blows. It looks nice at first glance, but it doesn't offer much.

same thing i've been saying... the UBP shelf warmer coupled with BMF shelf warmer convincingly tells us large sets are not right for the current economic climate. yes, the BMF is still sitting on shelves in abundance in my area retail stores despite various sales, etc.

Well I'm going to have to say I love it. I didn't get the collecting bug at the beginning and so I've had to play catch up. Putting a MoBAT in there really made me get this because I also didn't have any of the other vehicles in that pack.
Sure it would have been nice if there was one more other original figure in the pack like say, Blowtorch. But over all I am very pleased with what I got for the money. If you add all the vehicles up in price you are actually saving money even at $62.99 which is what I paid.

There is a big difference as I stated above. BMF is all new and meant as an addition to a significant collection. UBP is all repaints and is meant to attract new people to the line. |
