As many suspected/theorized/dreamed, he was considered for the part that ultimately became Joe Colton/Bruce Willis. I imagine if the Sarge actually got the role, it would've been much smaller than even what we're going to see with Willis.
Aftermath - Arda Ocal with Sgt. Slaughter - YouTube I still think it would be funny if he had a cameo, where they went to see him first, realized he was out of shape, then went to see Colton. |

I had suspected for quite a while, actually posted about it here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ml#post3113554
that Slaughter had an exclusive deal with WWE who in turn has an exclusive deal with Mattel, which prohibits Slaughter from getting back in GI Joe because of the Hasbro/Mattel competition...which SUCKS!!! I honestly thought having Slaughter in a live action Joe movie was such a no brainer, that I was expecting him in ROC. I actually dreamed up a whole fantasy cameo... You have the Joes via satelite reaching out to some old Joes to help with a mission, and then you see Slaughter and the Fridge together on a beach or by a pool or something, and they could say something along the lines of "we're on vacation, don't expect us back for 6 to 8 weeks" It would have meant nothing to the casuals but I'm sure it would've been the highlight of the movie for old school fans or collectors. I love the Sarge, I really hope that at some point they can figure out a way to work his deal, or maybe when his current deal expires have them write in a provision to make him an exception for GI Joe or something, because I still want a modern Slaughter's Marauders version, and I definitely want to see him in a live action Joe movie one day, assuming they hopefully make another if Retaliation is successful.

But that won't prevent Sgt Slaughter from taking on Rock as Roadblock.

Even if the Sarge was in the Movie, we still wouldn't get a mass release retail action figure of him.

While I personally DON'T think this would help the movie one way or another (probably would hurt it more than anything.....), I wonder if they could do it DIGITALLY, to help avoid any of this BS w/ the "actual" Sarge?
Or, who ultimately owns the rights to the "character" of the Sarge, in what means, since he was part of both franchises (WWE and GI Joe) back in the day? Knowing ole' Vince, I'm sure he's got the poor Sarge locked up by his tights for life...................... :( Glad to see the Rock was smarter than this / got a better contract he could get free of.

When he was part of G.I. Joe back in the day, he was in the AWA, not WWE(F).
I think he owns the rights, himself. |

Actually Sgt. Slaughter signed a "Legends" deal a while back (Early/mid 2000's) which a lot of old timers like Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, Iron Sheik and others have also signed. The deal gives the WWE control of their merchandising and public appearances a long with the rights to their on screen personas. They serve mostly as ambassadors for the WWE, promoting live events and doing charity work and so on. Hasbro has no rights to the character. They licensed the character in the 80's, but Slaughter still retained ownership. All they have are the rights to the material they paid him for. The Rock on the other hand was granted a full release from his WWE contract back in 2003. He also purchased the rights to the name "The Rock" from Vince because at the time studios felt the name was more marketable than Dwayne Johnson which they later went with anyway. As far as Slaughter being allowed to take part in the movie, it probably would have cost them a producers credit for Vince and a small "WWE films" mention in the credits. I think Bruce Willis makes more sense, to be honest. I'd love to see the sarge, but what they're going for seems cooler.
The toy is pretty much DH4 John McClain dressed has DH1 John McClain, but with shoes. I mean, look at it. In universe, John McClain is a one man army vs terrorists. Cobra are terrorists, and if anyone knows how to kick their rears, it'd be him. In otherwords, the glorious Die Hard shout out is worth giving up the Sarge for. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they retcon GIJoe, the doll, into having a similar background to McClain, but more Snake from Metal Gear, being Military and all. |
