Here's my take: the Stephen Sommers movies I have seen - Deep Rising, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Van Helsing -- have all been total crap. They all hare the same characteristics -- no suspense, god-awful dialogue, terrible pacing, and way way way too much lame and unfunny "humor." Yes, Sommers can do a good action scene, but the limited value of those scenes gets buried in the tidal wave of garbage around them.
There's just no evidence to me that this movie is going to be any good. When Stephen Sommers was announced as a director, my heart dropped. GI Joe as a concept is difficult enough to pull off on film, but with this director it will be a mockery. I want to be wrong, and if I'm wrong I'll be the first to admit it, but right now, things don't look good. |
