There have been a lot of posts about Chuckles; a great many have been negative. I have to admit, I'm biased. Chuckles was born in Arkansas and did a lot of work in Florida before joining the G.I. Joe team - that makes him a Southerner, and I've always felt that the Southern States were vastly under represented in G.I. Joe.
My home state of Mississippi can only lay claim to one member of the Joe team, Roadblock - though, I have to admit, that if you're just going to have one G.I. Joe to represent your State, Roadblock is a pretty good one to have. Louisiana claims Gung-Ho and Muskrat. Alabama has Beachhead, and Georgia has Scarlett. Tennessee has a few more, Fast-Draw among them. South Carolina has Wet Suit and Sgt. Slaughter, and North Carolina has Cross Country and Falcon. Virginia claims General Flagg among others. Proportionally, the U.S. Military has a huge percentage of Southerners serving and a large number of the most important military bases are located South of the Mason-Dixon line. I just find it a bit biased that because Hasbro is located in Rhode Island, so many Joes are from Rhode Island and other New England states... we could all do with a bit more equal representation throughout our entire nation, but I digress... To avoid a long diatribe on the matter of Chuckles, I will put it simply: Chuckles is the "Magnum P.I." of G.I. Joe. Hawaiian Shirt, Handgun, Intelligence Specialist... it all adds up. They brought Chuckles out in about '87, right at the end of Magnum's run on CBS. Chuckles is a likable, joking, charming sort of character who fools everyone into thinking he's their buddy, when he's actually a terrifically competent Intelligence Operative. He's a blond Tom Selleck with no mustache. And I am a bit biased since Magnum is my favorite show of all time. It seems that Hama thought a lot of Chuckles, even though he wasn't able to use him a great deal in the original series, he was always shown in a positive and competent light. However, if we look at Hama's miniseries for DDP, "G.I. Joe: Declassified" we find that Chuckles was there from the beginning. Chuckles' famous four issue run in Frontline was, in my opinion, the best thing DDP ever published for G.I. Joe. The Intelligence Operatives in G.I. Joe have never really gotten the attention or treatment they deserve. They were never really organized cohesively. And they always just came out with a new "Intelligence Specialist" every few years: Chuckles, Mace, Agent Faces, etc. It seems to be that for an organization like G.I. Joe (and let's be honest about it, the Joe team is basically a fantasy version of the Army's Delta Force), it would require an extensive Intelligence department as a vital component to it's operations. The Army's Delta Force has, as it's main intelligence component, the Intelligence Support Activity. The ISA is a vital component for clandestine military operations. Delta Force cannot simply depend on the C.I.A. - it needs spy-commandos: Army trained intelligence operatives. G.I. Joe would need the same thing - I sort of imagine it as the "G.I.A. - G.I. Joe Intelligence Activity". Chuckles was really the first (besides Scarlett) to be strictly devoted to this important specialty. Other Joes had been Covert Operations Specialists (Lady Jaye) and the like, but Chuckles really was the first G.I. Joe spy character. And instead of basing him on James Bond, or a C.I.A. operative, they based him on America's favorite Command-Spy turned Private Investigator: Magnum, P.I. I have always thought that instead of the Fridge, or Rocky Balboa, or even Sgt. Slaughter they should have turned Magnum into a member of the Joe team... I think Chuckles is pretty clearly the next best thing... and who doesn't love a Hawaiian shirt? I mean really, if you were in the military and you found a way to wear a Hawaiian shirt to work everyday, wouldn't you? So quit hating on Chuckles. He's one of the most important characters in G.I. Joe. I couldn't be happier that he's going to be honored by being recreated in a 25th anniversary edition. I'll probably buy two of them. And I don't think I'm alone in this opinion: Chuckles is the man! And I also can't wait for Recondo! Let's face it: did any G.I. Joe ever have a uniform cooler than original Recondo with his Aussie style hat and safari shirt? I think not. The original Jungle trooper - He's always been one of my favorites. I remember when they made him the helicopter pilot for Tiger Force. I bought the helicopter just to get Recondo. I remember thinking, "Why did they make him a vehicle driver? He could have been the whole of Tiger Force all by himself!" And he represents the great state of Wisconsin... way to go, Wisconsin.

The problem is many people think of Chuckles not as the spy, but the big dumb musclebound buffoon who couldn't operate a HAVOC properly "next time Chuckles use the rocket launcher", and was sitting on top of a Tomahawk helecopter as it was flying off, taking shots with his hand gun.
The movie made him into a horrible character, and that's sadly what most people are probably remembering. In the comics he was more interesting yes. |

Actionfigures.com October Q & A
Here is the latest round of Hasbro G.I. Joe Q & A. Q: Will there be any more classic 1980's 3 3/4"" figures after fall 2008? A: In late 2008 you will see a bonus wave of single figures and classic comic packs that are redecos of figures from the 25th Anniversary collection. Due to the huge success of the G.I. Joe line, we were able to squeeze in a number additional figures into the end of this year. But this does not mean the end of classic figures or new tooling! As we head into 2009 prior to the August 2009 live-action movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, you will see newly tooled classic vehicles, newly tooled versions of your favorite characters from G.I. Joe Resolute, and a number of favorites you have been waiting for: Dr. Mindbender, Alpine, Tunnel Rat, Alley Viper, Recondo, Outback, Night Creeper, Zap, Shockwave, and even more! With the release of the 2009 movie you will see many of your favorite 1980's characters in movie styling, but that does not mean the end of the classic style. The Hasbro G.I. Joe Team recognizes that there are plenty of additional classic 1980's figures and vehicles to release in the future after the movie and in the years to come." Q: With the upcoming Gi Joe Resolute cartoon, and the figures that are done for the series, will there be vehicles also with a more realistic style we will most likely see in the TV series made? With the more adult fans these figures will most likely attract, there is already many military vehicle fans who also collect Gi Joes, who would like a more realistic approach, like the recent Indiana Jones Cargo Truck and Troop car which many 1:18 scale Military collectors also purchased. A: While the vehicles you will see in Resolute will be more realistic, they will not cross over into military. For the toy line, we are going to continue with classic vehicles into the spring. Q: Considering the upcoming release of GI Joe Specialist: Trakker figure is there any chance that this may be a sort of testing of the proverbial waters for a return of M.A.S.K.? Perhaps in the 3 3/4" scale? A: The Matt Trakker figure was not a test, but a tribute to a line that many Joe fans from the 80's had a connection with. No plans for M.A.S.K. to return right now. Q: Is there a possibility that any other M.A.S.K. characters might make an appearance in the GI Joe line? A: No, Matt Trakker was a one-of-a-kind. Q: Is there any chance that future sculpts could feature wrists in more natural positions given the fairly limited range of motion in the elbows? Currently figures such as the Cobra Viper (though there are many others with which this is the case - Roadblock being another good example) feature sculpts where the wrists are angled out away from the body, making it difficult - I have found - to pose them holding their weapons in both hands. The current style might be more correct if they were able to hold their weapons with the butts against their shoulders, but the current range of motion in the elbows doesn't allow for that. It's been my thought that if the wrists were sculpted to be bent in the other direction, it might be easier and more natural looking to get them holding their rifles with both hands. A:Thank you for the feedback. We have passed it on to our design team. Q: So far the reuse of parts between various characters has generally been quite successful, and it's often quite difficult to discern which characters share parts without closer inspection! I understand how well this may help in keeping costs down, and therefore helps in keeping us fans in new recruits for our collections. However, the reuse of head sculpts is starting to become quite a sticking point with many collectors. Is this something we can continue to expect, or is it possible that we might be able to expect some improvements here with the continued success of the line? The Cutter figure in the upcoming series of three-packs is of particular consternation to myself - he not only looks exactly like Gung-Ho when I feel he should look much more distinct, but he's also ended up wearing a head cover which to my knowledge has never been used by the Coast Guard. I understand that it saves money, but in cases like this it often comes off as a major cheat. A:Thanks for the feedback and we will do our best to improve this in the future. Many times our exclusive figures (such as Cutter) are planned after the mainline and do not have the time or budget to account for new heads...thus our design team uses the best tool available to make the best figure. |

Alot of exciting news
I like the announcement of Chuckles. They can always use the Flint/Cobra Trooper from wave 11 and put Chuckles head on it and have him "Undercover" With the announcement of Recondo and Dr Mindbender I'm hoping that finishes of the constant "where is Recondo?" "where is Dr Mindbender?" posts. Now lets start the "where is Gnawgahyde?" "where is Road Pig?" posts |

Hasbro has not specify the release date for those. I'm willing to bet in early '09! As for the Sgt. Slaughter, I thought there was a license issue!?
