I dunno... how many seasons did Alias last for? Not to mention the Mystique comic which had the same vibe.
You would not need to keep the focus on Chuckles the whole time though... meh I dunno...
Anyway this comic rocked. I kinda don't like the "you don't exist anymore" MIB/GI Joe reloaded thing... I miss the "how does someone stationed in a a Chaplin's Assistant program get so many medals" "well you see in our spare time we fight International terrorism mam" "oh Col. Abernathy you're so funny" kinda thing instead.
But cool comic none the less.

Would Hawk really have killed Duke if he turned down the job? That is something I would expect from Cobra Commander, not the Joes. I love the old Marvel run, but damn Hama, thats cold blooded.

I read the new Hama story online.
The other day, I read an interesting opinion on here; I'm sorry I can't recall who said it. Anyway, it was something like, "I think of Larry Hama like I think of Stan Lee... Thank you for what you've done in the past, but 'no thanks' to what you're doing now."
I've read G.I. Joe since the beginning (showing my age now, I suppose) and this notion bothered me at first. I have a lot of respect for Larry Hama. I grew up on his work, and as I go back and reread the original run, I can't help but think that it still holds up even after all this time. However, all the fans on this site are committed to G.I. Joe - probably just as committed as I am - and so I took some time to think about this comparison of Larry Hama to Stan Lee. I called my brother, we talked about it. After a great deal of thought, maybe he's right.
Larry Hama wrote a lot of great G.I. Joe stories, especially back before issue 130 or so. However, not every story was fantastic and not every storyline was really that interesting. He played favorites. And when it comes to Duke, if you never saw the TV show, it would be pretty hard to like Duke if you just read Hama.
Now I will be the first to admit that he can still do it when he wants to... DDP's G.I. Joe: Declassified was excellent. And for an old timer like me, it was a jewel and a breath of fresh air. To be sure, Larry Hama still has a few cards up his sleeve. He is one heck of a writer and no one will ever know the Joe's like he does.
But consider, for a moment, what he's been asked to do now by IDW. "Hey, Larry Hama, we would like you to take all that continuity that you invented 25 years ago, and built a whole world around, and built much of your career around, and throw it away. We want you to start all over from scratch."
How would a man even begin such a thing? Would you try to make each character completely different, just for the sake of being different? The way Hawk was portrayed in this new comic... that's not the Hawk we all know and love. Well, he's not supposed to be the same Hawk, but does that mean that Hama's gone too far in trying to be different that now Hawk is not very likable? What about 1Sgt Duke? Insubordinate? Really, from the man who embodied the Airborne Infantry? Duke, The Joe who personified esprit de Corps of the Airborne Rangers - came across like some kind of civilian recruit.
What is G.I. Joe now? I suppose it stands to reason that we'll all just have to wait and find out. I am a bit worried after reading this preview. The art was great. It looked good, but so did DDP. I'm worried that in trying to be new, Larry Hama may simply exchange quality for novelty in an effort to be a different writer rather than being the great writer we know. Hama has always let strong characters drive his writing... if he lets mere "newness" or "difference" drive his writing, I think the comic will suffer greatly.
One constraint which I am concerned with, is the fact that it may be hard to introduce completely new characters. Snake-eyes will sort of have to look like the same popular character we all know and love, or fans will go nuts. Will we all be waiting around to see what our favorite characters are like in this new continuity? Is this going to be more like Marvel's Ultimates than an entirely new series?
As to the Cobra comic with Chuckles as the main character, I could not be more excited. Chuckles has always been one of my very favorites, and his job as the G.I. Joe spy has been vastly overlooked. There are two great reasons to appreciate Chuckles: 1. He's the Joe team's version of Magnum, P.I. ;)
2. A unit like G.I. Joe (and the best real world comparison is the Army's Delta Force) would need a strong intelligence component. Delta Force has the Army's Intelligence Support Activity (HQ at Ft. Meade, Maryland. There's a good book on this unit called, "The Killer Elite") to act as it's commando-spies and provide intel for it's operations. The C.I.A. and NSA and NRO, and even the DIA cannot provide all the information that the Military Special Ops guys need... they need Special Operations trained soldier-spies to provide intel with a specific mission focus.
To get to my point, this Cobra series with Chuckles could serve as a great jumping off point as a G.I. Joe spy book, not just with Chuckles, but with all the Intel Operatives on the Joe Team: Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Low-Light, Claymore, Sure Fire, Agent Faces, Mace, Storm Shadow, etc.
This book provides a real opportunity for an espionage story line that not only traces the background of Cobra, but sheds a lot of light on Military Intelligence Operations. Where does G.I. Joe get all of it's intelligence on Cobra's activities? Presumably, Cobra is not coming over the television proclaiming to hold the world hostage via a weather dominator anymore.
Real Human Intelligence takes work and it's often dangerous. Is there a G.I. Joe Intelligence component? Is there a G.I.A. - G.I. Joe Intelligence activity - that provides valuable information to the rest of the unit without blowing their own deep cover? Who do they report to?
I'll be interested to know what you guys think. Thanks.
Why aren't there more Joes from the Deep South?
And would it kill Hasbro to give us a Marine Corps Officer?
