The artist keeps the original artwork and OWNS it. If the publisher wants to use the artwork again, they must pay for the rights to use it again.
The real restrictions come from 'work for hire' contracts. Those contracts are common in the entertainment industry working with movies and video games. Any artist can reproduce their work that they created - contract work or not, for self promotion only, which is common to negotiate in work for hire contracts. |
