But then I live in the NW too, back East I imagine a display like that might be more of a problem. But seriously. This close to a shipping port from Hong Kong. . .back in '92 we were literally choking on surplus figures and vehicles. I know two guys that have literally that many Joes, and they aren't dealers. Listen. The 80s Joes really aren't that rare. The sense of rarity comes from the competition that results from 2 or 3 bidders online that think any particular item is truly rare. There are only a handful of products from the 80s ARAH era that are truly HTF (the Sears sets, the CAT I, Mickey Mouse CC, etc). All the rest are still MISB and stocked ceiling high in the storage units of a very old toy-collector on dialysis in So-Cal, for example. The first generation of the pre-internet ARAH Joe collectors, guys like Lenny Lee, Mike Livanos, and Ted Isaacs, were like some kind of old dragons. . .or leprechauns with their overstock Joe hoards; trading sealed items that no one else wanted at the time. Just ask Tommy Wheeler sometime. ;) -PJ |

I think we should schedule a tour? Kind of like a GI Joe Disney world. What a massive and impressive collection and display.

Toy collecting has really changed over the past 20 years. I came into it at the very end of the "feast" so to speak, and ended up with some very nice leftovers. One surplus outlet here used to have stacks of Thunderclaps, Phantoms, Crusaders, and everything else from the year before and after. The store owners were getting impatient and had to get rid of the "junk". So you could get a sealed Phantom for $15, or you could make bulk deals if you just loaded it in your truck and got it all out of there. One collector that I had the opportunity to meet later in life did just that. LK was a shrewd old Marine-turned-landscaper that routinely helped clear out old toystore overstock within a 30 mile radius or so. He added what he wanted to his collection and traded with a bunch of guys back East. As everyone knows--back in the 80s, overstock was a big problem and Hasbro's really changed since then. So this dude would tell the owner's "Listen, you don't have anyone else willing to haul this crap out, so I'll give you a buck a figure and a something equally ridiculous for all your boxed vehicles and playsets. Whaddaya say?" They'd shake hands on it and then grab a dock-dolly to run everything out. To this day, LK's collecting style is "Three of everything, plus a few more loose here and there." He's got two barns that he stored them in on his er--ranch I guess you'd call it. He owns his own business and has a lot of land. This dude collects everything man. His Megos are to die for, and he's got trains that should be in magazines. When you see his Joe stuff though, you want to cry. For example, he owns over a dozen sealed and unsold Sears SMS sets. I counted them. He talks about all his pieces in plural form, it's annoying. He's keeping it all too. Getting stuff from him is impossible. I only got a Skystriker and a Night Raven until he closed the door on that. He's been talking about running a sales table at a con or something, but he never gets around to it. But back to the toy stores. After the lions left the kill, you might say I was the jackal to pick the carcass. I'd go into those same places and hear talk about 1 or 2 guys that had "just been in here with a truck." I'd get so frustrated because I never knew what I missed. But still, I'd go home with quite a bit. In one day, I took home a Condor, a Phantom, a HISS II, a Piranha, and a buttload of Tiger Force figures. I didn't have my driver's license yet, so I talked the guy into putting everything in an empty shipper for the Barbie horse ranch playsets. That bus driver was pissed. The passengers just stared. Best score of my life. The point being that there was little enough competetition at the time, that this same dude at Toy Traders didn't have much problem getting all his. We really were in the right place at the right time. -PJ |
