why do people who don't collect always stereo type us as "childish and weird" or some unshaven dude who lives in his mothers basement. i heard a guy on espn radio today going on and on about how it was childish and weird for anyone over the age of 30 to camp out to see "the dark knight". really ticked my off. there is nothing weird about having collecting as your hobby, it is just as legitimate as women who have 25 pairs of shoes, whats the real difference, or a guy who has a sports car that he tools with. "PLEASE UNDERSTAND I AM NOT DIRECTING THIS TOWARD YOUR WIFE OR HER PERSONALLY" Just the perception we all know is out there.
i think the office cubicle rocks, it is not overdone or out of control. kudo's on getting mentioned on cnn.com |

When I worked for a large sub-prime Mortgage company a few years ago I found myself having eBay and internet bought toys sent to the office instead of home mainly for security reasons. Most of the toys were taken home the very same day, but a few did stay behind to take resident on my shelves in my cube.
I never opened most packages, I just slid them into my cabinet or underneath my desk. I started off in the mail room when I joined the company so I had a good relationship w/ the guys/gals and the manager in the mail room so it wasn't a big deal. I had a few Xevoz (remember those?) and the NECA staction of MOTU Clawful on my desk. Too many of my co-workers were hands-on so I never left toys out that I cared greatly for. Despite everything, the last manager I had before being laid off (and the whole company folding) had this view of collecting toys as being childish and such. It never affected my work production that I could tell, but she didn't like it none the less. Nothing was EVER said to me, then one day out of the blue someone from HR came by w/ the area head honcho and asked me to remove everything at once. My cube was no where as decorated as Xerofall's, but I guess if you put anything personal up that isn't pics of your family you're "out of line". Now I manage a self storage facility and have my own office. I routinely pick up a figure here and there when I have to run errands for work and I'll set up said figure on my desk. Currently I have a few of the new Star Wars Stormtroopers on the desk and my general manager asked me a lot about them last time he stopped by. Proceeded to tell me about all of the SW books he has read and asked where he could pick up a figure or two as he never paid any attention to them and thought they were cool. So there, not everyone out there labels us as childish or weird. Now, I should get back to work!

whats funny about sports guys is they'll spend all day bashing that but then spend a week camped out for a game, like the two are not the exact same. though I really don't worry about folks who collect pictures of grown men as hobby! lol

As a side note, I have a Colonel America zombie and Soviet Superman Minimate sitting on my office computer monitor. I love it when people come in and just keep staring at them, like "what the hell is this?" |
