But if someone has seen anything, I hope we get a brief description. |

I've always said that if they had Jesus Christ playing the main character, Satan himself as the villain, Charleton Heston's ghost as the sidekick and Helen of Troy as the love interest, they handed out free popcorn and drinks and had supermodels in Princess Leia gold bikinis giving out handys in the theater, the movies could never live up to the expectations that the audience has built up for them. While the SW prequels have problems, they were pretty good movies. Their main problem is that they weren't what the audience expected. They wanted Boba Fett kicking all sorts of butt, and they didn't expect Jar Jar, or for Anakin to be a child.
Folks, let's enjoy the film we get, not the film we wanted. If you can do better, be my guest. | while it is convenient to make the argument of expectations to absolve the films of their actual quality just because you liked them, the movies that you listed that I did not like sucked because they were awful movies, not because of my expectations. I was disappointed because of my expectations, but the quality of those movies sucked on their own right.
expectations and quality aren't mutually exclusive. you can actually be disappointed because of your expectations and the movie can suck as well. I'm not sure why you would try to claim otherwise.

But, if, say, Episodes 1-3 were made before 4-6, do you think people would have had as much of a problem with Anakin making 3PO? or a goofy comic relief sidekick character who was presumably killed/retired/abandoned/forgotten in the 20 years between Episodes 3 and 4?
Even if Episode 1 came out in 1986, I don't think folks would have had much of a problem. Partly becasue in 86, Lucas couldn't have relied on CGI, and many of the aspects of the movie would have been different (Jar Jar would have been a guy-in-suit, probably no Kamino, probably no Yoda fight, etc)
Perhaps a better example than Star Wars is the backlash that some folks had over Transformers, or even the last Harry Potter book. As a longtime lurker here and over at TFW2005, people had absolute fits over the robots not looking exactly like their G1 counterparts. There were folks who didn't think that the Deathly Hallows wrapped things up well enough. My point is that people build up expectations over things that no movie/season finale/book could ever satisfy, and are disappointed with nearly everything they see.
I can't wait until Judgement Day, when people say "you know, I thought Jesus would be taller." |
