Snake Eyes' and Storm Shadow had no history in the cartoon. Such a fundamental difference from the comic, yet it was still enjoyable and no less GI JOE.
That's how I'm approaching the movie too: Different, but still GI JOE. If that 'different' involves Snakes Ninja kickin' butt as a nipper then it won't matter to me. But what about the movie's spirit? Should fans expect to see a live-action version of the cartoon, an update on the Marvel comics, or something else entirely? According to Goldner, Sommers and crew want to take filmgoers back a couple of decades: "Steve Sommers is very different. But he's perfect, because if you think about his movies like 'The Mummy,' it's the perfect action/adventure movie. If you think about what we're trying to do for G.I. Joe, really bringing back that '80s G.I. Joe from the Marvel comics -- those first 155 issues are really our focus. If you think about that, you'll understand what we're trying to get at with all those characters and all the intricate relationships. I don't think you'd see this movie as wacky. I think you're going to see this movie as being inspirational for younger kids and totally in the sweet spot for the guys who grew up on G.I. Joe." To read more of Brian Goldner's thoughts on G.I. Joe -- which debuts August 2009 -- follow the link below! |

'Influenced' more than 'based on', I'd say. The updated timeframe already rules out the movie being a direct translation, and of the two (cartoon or comic) they're obviously going to cite the latter as the major source as it's the one with the most characterisation and plot.

I doubt Hasbro would run to the expense of creating new moulds for 'kiddie figures' when it's very unlikely those moulds can be used again in the future. Something like Young Annakin from The Phantom Menace maybe, as the market is far bigger, but GI joe? Can't see it myself.
