My intial thoughts after reading Rachel Nichols tweet was that the studio was deliberely dishing out misinformation to keep the storyline secret. Now, after reading Mr. Chu's article, I'm not so certain.
What the writers should do at the very least is pick up where the first film ended, with Zartan. If they use different characters, and leave out the primary cast, it may turn out to be a good film, but in the end all the fans will be like, " hey, where's so-and-so?". The first film was succesful I believe because it brought a reality to the concept of the toys that we grew up with, and did so in a very balanced way. If they maintain that balance, and minimize the use of digital effects, the second film could still be succesful. I personally have my doubts at this point, first because My understanding is that at least one, if not more of the original cast simply wasn't interested in returning. Secondly, though the first film was succesful, it was marginal and provides a basis for the studios to calculate a budget for a sequel. Early on I heard that this was a major factor in possible cuts to the second film. It would be a major mistake for the studio to revert to a movie with just three characters like we've been told, more in line with the X-MEN: Origins films. This type of movie would seriously detract from the plausibility of the film, and would totally render the first film a failure, regardless of it's financial earnings when released. Lastly, the major audiences here are not kids, but adults like myself in their thirties and forties who know the characters, the plots, and so on. If GI JOE is going to be a succesful film, or tv series, or whatever form it takes, it must reach that audience with the core storyline, and do so in a way that doesn't become lethargic. In conclusion I am really glad to see the first film, and I hope that the second one will be succesful as well. I also hope that the movies lead to a live action tv series for those of us who grew up watching GI JOE. It really speaks across genders and nationalities, and provides a common goal that we all share: Freedom from Oppression and tyranny. |
