I remember the Transformer extremists saying the film would "kill the franchise dead", yet now they have a cartoon, two toy lines and several comics, including thelr precious (and clearly not "dead") G1 title.

They are making a G.I.Joe movie because 1980's nostalgia is money right now... I would have done this piece set an an alternate psedo-1980's world and not necessarily be total camp, and self-mockery but you could use it as a commentary on the world we are today, through the eyes of a 1980's Cartoon/Comic and still have an awesome character driven adventure story.
and 2. this movie isn't being made because of 80's nostalgia. it is being made because Transfomers was a hit. that is the only reason why. of course, Hasbro and Paramount have simplified the similarities of the brands to conclude that because one was a hit the other should be as well. I think that is flawed. outside of a brief period in the early 90's, Transformers has stayed a relatively successful brand that has continued to draw in new fans and consumers for nearly 25 years. the movie made sense because they not only had 25 years of a built up audience, bu the movie was also something brand new, special effects wise, that simply wasn't able to be accomplished before now. so, not only did you have 25 years of Transformers fans and the hardcore fans from the 80's to see the movie, you also had the general movie going public who simply had some familiarity with the concept, found it intriguing, and wanted to see something new that hadn't been done before -- live action transforming robots. G.I. Joe does not have that. the brand hasn't really been relevant since the late 80's. the early 90's saw it lose it's steam to TNMT, the RAHC from the late 90's pretty much only appealed to the collectors from the 80's, the new sculpt line failed to make a significant impact on the toy market (I don't recall Hasbro ever mentioning the brand in any of it's annual reports during that time frame as a significant contributor to it's boy's action figure sales), Sigma 6 came and went and the 25th again is aimed at the adults. the point is not only does it not have a solid 25 year window of consumers, just predominantly us from the 80's, but the movie and the concept simply doesn't offer anything new to the general audience that doesn't have a predisposition to the brand. this movie doesn't do anything new that hasn't been seen before in some other manner. sure, there will be a lot of special effects, but nothing so totally unique that will draw people in for that sake. the only hope for this movie to succeed is to capture the attention of a new audience, especially children, and being set in the 80's as some sort of parody would not do that. I think you are making that up because you need that factor to justify your position, and you think it sounds legitimate enough that people will buy it. ooh, 80's backlash! they're coming to get you, 80's! Last edited by gunslingercbr; 05-16-2008 at 10:58 AM.. |

I think what I was trying to get after was putting it in a setting where the time doesn't matter, right now it seems they are really banking on setting it "10 years in the future" - as far as I remember while G.I.Joe was "futuristic" it was never blatenly set in the future. I think you make very valid points, and maybe the intention of what I was trying to say was lost. I don't want a goofy parody, I'm just trying to sort through how this movie could be done in the most effective manner, and what I see now makes me think they are missing the mark, and it looks awkward. |

I've said before, I am more interested in change than rehash, but those accelerator suits couldn't miss the mark aesthetically any more than they do. I think in this case, less would have been more, and a simpler looking suit would come across better. but, I'll wait and see them in action before I write them off completely or ridicule the designers or filmmakers for them. |

I'm not impressed. Definitly not the Joes we know and love. I'm sure the movie will be cool but like transformers it won't be what we know.

If these exact same images had been released, but with the actors wearing 'classic JOE' uniforms, we'd be seeing multiple "this film will rock!" posts. A totally opposite but equally absurd leap of 'logic' that the quality of this film will hinge on nothing but how the costumes look.

Not saying the movie will suck because of these suits, but if the casting sucks, the costumes suck, the storyline has changed, then it's hard to get into a movie if all the elements are horrible to you.
