Okay, now we've heard of the news that sommers has been booted, let's see who can replace him.
My nominess are: -Joe Carnahan: I watched the A-Team and I really felt a lot of Joe vibes in it. -Sylvester Stallone: Yup, Expendables is pretty much close to a Joe movie as we get one. But, he might need to get rid of his signature ultra-violence. -Jon Favreau: I know this is kinda impossbile, but I believe his directorial style might just be the one we need for this franchise. -Matthew Vaughn: This British director does know how to make a good adaptation. -JJ Abrams: He always does a good adaptation. -Antoine Fuqua: He does a good job with military action movies like Shooter and Tears of the Sun, so why not give him a try at Joe. -Len Wiseman: I think this guy can make G.I. Joe as Explosive as Live Free or Die Hard -Josoph Kosinski: I was impressed with Tron: Legacy.

I don't think any of them -good picks btw- would jump in unless we're talking about a reboot. And god, let this be the case. After all, DARREN ARONOFSKY is making a Wolverine flick because they let him make it a stand alone story, and not a sequel to the first atrocity...

Chris Nolan isn't "a bit of a long shot." He's a flat-out impossibility, because unless they delay the film another year or so Nolan will be busy making the next Batman movie.
Of the list above: Carnahan, Wiseman, and Kosinski are about the only real possibilities. Favreau is tied up with Disney, Abrams will be working on "Trek 2" and Vaughn is probably too "hot" and on the "rise to the top" track to step into the shoes of a B-list director like Sommers. Wiseman operates about on the same level as Sommers, so he's possible. Kosinski is basically a "rookie" so he's possible (is he interested in something that'd be much less visually striking than Tron, though?), and Carnahan is on the verge of being in "director jail" because A-Team didn't do so hot (though whether Paramount would accept him after that disappointing performance is another question). Chances are we end up with a studio hack (Ratner-esque) or a rookie/unknown. That's pretty much the current studio MO when a franchise loses its' director, unless there's someone out there that's a big name that genuinely has a big interest in Joe. The only plus side is that it's early enough in the process that prospective directors won't be put off by basically "finishing someone else's movie." Oddly about the biggest name that might actually be possible is Michael Bay. He'll be done with Transformers and there's a lot about Joe that's right in his comfort zone. I will throw this one out there, Micheal Bay.
Yeah, that's right, I went there. He already has two very succesfull Transformers movies under his belt and is almost done with the third installment. He works well with the military, already has a great working relationship with Hasbro. Plus he loves to blow things up and shoot action sceenes. I think he can develope a movie that would ballance the kid market as well as the adult fans. I would guess that he would want to treat it as a reboot so he could put his spin on it, but that might be a good thing. Well, thats my two cents.

Bay threw out much of the G1 mythology, recreated characters for no real reason, killed off beloved characters ... for no good reason (and gave Megatron super-decepticon powers that he never had before or since), and added dumb humor to scenes that really didn't need. His last script was incoherent. At best, he would keep the movie at the same level; at worst, it would be the worst movie ever made. It would be loud and neat, but so was RoC.
