Exclusive: G.I. JOE SEQUEL is Happening; Zombieland’s Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick Writing G.I. JOE 2
G.I. JOOOOOOEEEEE (2)!! -- Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. While some didn’t think much of director Stephen Sommers G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, I had a blast watching the cartoon come to life, because that’s what it was. Nothing more, nothing less. And the people that understood that, well, they had a blast watching all their favorite characters on the big screen. And even though some might think the film wasn’t profitable, the fact is The Rise of Cobra made over $300 million at the worldwide box office and I’m sure it helped to sell a lot of toys. What I’m trying to say is, this film made people money, and when that happens, you get sequels! More after the jump…including a MAJOR UPDATE: Back in August, we reported Paramount’s Vice Chairman Rob Moore said a sequel would soon go into development. Since that time, the studio has provided no updates for fans. But thanks to some very reliable sources, I can report a screenwriter has been hired for G.I. Joe 2 (or whatever it’s going to be called) and Paramount is definitely moving forward with the project. While I tried my best to find out who landed the writing gig, my sources wouldn’t budge. I also wasn’t able to learn if Stephen Sommer’s is going to direct the sequel or if they’re bringing in fresh blood. Of course the sequel is still in the early stages of development, but since a screenplay has been commissioned and if it turns out that everyone involved likes it, I’d imagine we’ll hear a lot more about this in the coming months. Also, all the actors from the first film were signed for sequels, so that should make the process a bit smoother. UPDATE: As I said last night, a writer has been hired for G.I. Joe 2. What I didn’t know was…I should have said WRITERS. Thanks to a great source, I can report Zombieland’s Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are writing the sequel to G.I. Joe! This is on top of the recently announced news that they’re writing Deadpool for 20th Century Fox. While I don’t know how long they’ve been on either project, as a huge fan of Zombieland, I’m really excited they’re on Joe. As always, more as we get it. |
