Occasional Superheroine:: G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra - Conspiracy Meta-Theory Rosetta Stone
I seriously doubt anyone involved in ROC had much of an inkling about any of the points the writer makes, and obviously the writer is talking a bit tongue-in-cheek but I think there's lots of food for thought there. It certainly gave me pause and I'm looking at Joe-related things in a new light. Some of the coincidences and similarities are stretches but not unbelievably so.

WOW. I would really like to meet/mindf*** that woman who wrote that. Absolutely brilliant. Absolutely true, no. But, she makes the point several times that she is merely going to the extremes in order to cover all possible ground. So much research and knowledge, now I'm going to have the weirdest dreams ever. And I thought watching Wim Wenders' "Wings of Desire" was going to be the trippiest part of my day, lol.
Thanks for the link, man! A great read.
Looking for a couple of the Shipwreck figures from the 5-Packs. As well as both antennas for the Mauler.

And some folks here think the writers for RoC sucked...
Good read but meh on the believable scale.

That was a fun read. I don't particularly buy it (and don't really think we're meant to), but it's still interesting. I know others have had the idea that the Cobra/Joe conflict goes back much further than modern times (prolific customizer AdrienVeidt and his "everything and the kitchen sink" setting most notably).
I also find it interesting that this seems to be the route they're taking with SHIELD and HYDRA in the Marvel Comics setting (see the solicits for the upcoming SHIELD series by Hickman).

Double dang it. Looks like my lurker status is busted. :(
Somebody finally, finally sees GI Joe as I perceive it. Part of me rejoices... but alas, another part of me has died inside I guess. You know, when you think you have this great, seemingly original, possibly revolutionary (you'd hope) idea, that nobody else has thought of yet, biding your time until the moment is right, to unleash it on the world. Guess that moment has passed, LOL.
See, this, THIS is how I've perceived GI Joe for about 7-8 years now. Call me crazy, call me what you will (obsessed?), but GI Joe is obviously an OUTLET for each and every one of us. I guess I am obsessed with this aspect of the hobby. I'd been working on a story for years now (even to the point where I researched ways to potentially get a movie script going -- several others in the Joe community were involved and may remember this). Still working on this story. Kind of just enjoying the development part. Some things just seem to come to me, with no research or familiarity. They just connect. But that doesn't happen often. Usually I find myself forcing out a story, and wasting a lot of effort in an attempt to avoid "ASB"-ing elements. Her approach in her post is exactly how I've approached GI Joe since about 2002 or something like that.
I haven't seen the live-action movie yet. Don't know if I ever will someday (would rather waste two of my hours on... something actually worth wasting my two hours on, LOL). From the sounds of it, it's a real shame the movie wasn't fleshed out more. Then again, most people won't waste their time dissecting a movie on a level such as this. Maybe that's for the experts, or the obsessed. Or maybe this kind of writing is only worth saving for fan fiction, graphic novel, comic, TV series, Internet discussions etc. But at least for me, I want to think most people are this way, when something is fleshed out, ever so subtly, it catches your eye, you want to find out more about it, you are intrigued, it appeals to you, etc. Hate to say it, but at this point there's a good chance for most people to become a fan on some level.
Kind of going with the movie ("bashing") again, and looking back on the history of Joe as a whole, as with any media or concept there have been "fail" times. I won't cite any examples, it's all relative and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there have been times in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s etc. where "it just didn't work." Maybe at times it was just too "out there", or it was just an experiment at the time (then again isn't all marketing just an experiment, since it seems like Hasbro rarely gives the average fan or collector what he/she really wants?). I want to hold on to all those moments where it DID work. And pull it together as a whole, into one amalgam that, hopefully, WILL work on its own.
What I think originally made me go this direction with GI Joe, I think, is the "military realism" of the comic, with the "icing" of being introduced to a certain video game around 2002 on the PSOne... "Metal Gear Solid (Greatest Hits)". I know I am not alone when I say MGS contains a lot of aspects I would love to see happen in GI Joe. Suddenly my eyes began to open, sometimes perceiving a hidden, deeper level, but most of the time, searching for hidden, deeper levels rooted inside GI Joe. Inside its figures. Its vehicles. Character backgrounds. Moving on to Governments. Clans. Ninjas. Militaries. Science. Technology. Religion. Societies. Conspiracies. Evolution. New World Order. UFO crash sites. Secret Societies. I could go on and on...
Not that I follow any of the above said as true or real. Like I said this is just an outlet. Non-fiction, but trying to brave out a level of depth and authenticity that others could appreciate and enjoy. I like to see what can be done with this. I crave to see what, still, CAN be done with GI Joe down the road. Do I hope or care how "mainstream" GI Joe may ever become? Yeah I guess I do. A part of me, I confess, wants the next person to like GI Joe as much as I do. I guess it's that crazy part that doesn't want to be looked down upon for what it is: crazy.
Well I had to get that out of my system.
